Port problem could not have chemo

Hello everyone. I wasn’t able to have chemo this weekend as my port wouldn’t bring blood back- 4 nurses tried and they tried various drugs etc. I have just been told I’m BRAF this week and just really wanted to get another chemo in before a scan to see if it’s working (which had been brought forward because of the braf news).

I’ve no doubt the hospital will get straight ok to sorting the port, they’re wonderful. I’m pretty new to all this, I was only on my 4th chemo, I know ports don’t always behave but do people know if I’ll be able to have chemo or if I’ll now just miss this one and have my next in 2 weeks? My friend is a gp and said she thought you would not have chemo less than 2 weeks apart- I can ask the hospital tomorrow but if anyone knows! Ideally I don’t want 4 weeks off given my cancer is very aggressive.

Thanks so much

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your port challenges. My portocath never got stuck but I did have times when I couldn't have my fortnightly chemo cycle. In my case, as long as the issue causing my delay was resolved in time, the hospital just moved my chemo to the next week, thus moving remaining schedule with it.

I hope you get your port resolved swiftly or they choose to administer via a different route.

  • Hi

Same as  . Mum’s was moved to the following week if she was well enough . If she was sick they gave her the two weeks .

However most times they got her in the next week . Mum never used a port . All her infusions were done by cannula .

    Take care ,

  • Thank you, thstd great to know- and thank you in sure they will sort the port/ as you say find an alternative x

  • Thank you too, very helpful, as always x

  • Sorry, sent without letting me finish and can’t edit …Rolling eyes

    Hi  ,

I had a few issues with my port last year, always had to lay flat, raise an arm, cough, get stabbed multiple times. Once it just wouldn’t work so had an x-ray to check it was still in place and the a couple doses of heparin and that did the trick, must have had a big clot stuck in there. I wouldn’t worry too much about delaying chemo a week or too, just enjoy the break and get prepared to tackle the next one!!!

    take care x

  • Awe thank you Cecile- yes we tried all of these things- well I don't know what things they were giving me but they gave me things and had my dancing around etc- the nurses thought yes something like a clot- thank you though that makes me feel much better- I think the combination of being told I'm BRAF and so the chemo might not be working with the and you can't have it today I did take pretty well but obviously it's not ideal- but as you say make the most of the break and onwards- thank you very much for the support and it sounds like your port is good now so hopefully getting any issues out of the way early is the way. Take Care too xx

  • Apologies if this is a bit late - hope by now your port is sorted and you have a new date for chemo.

My PICC line often won't give drawback I find I need to move around a lot and drink plenty. Only yesterday at my chemo it wouldn't work but after an x Ray the nurse said he'd give it one more go before I would need the unblocking stuff (sorry about remember the name of it !) and luckily bingo it worked.

Lying with head low wiggling shoulders chin on chest coughing deep breathing all worth trying

    Good luck

    Caroline

  • Hi Caroline, I've got an appointment with the port wizards tomorrow! I will try and keep extra hydrated in future and maybe I should go walking before chemo- we did a lot of making me dance about but I was early morning and usually I've been about 11am so I'd have usually moved about a lot more- anyway hopefully the port fixers will know and moving forward will be grand- will do all these things- chemo booked for Saturday thank you and hope you're okay x

  • Just an update port got fixed on Thursday/ they got blood coming back so we agreed to leave it in and I was able to have chemo on Saturday (still had to lie down to get it working but it did hooray)!! The port is apparently at a strange angle but hopefully it’ll be okay now- I have chemo on Saturdays so the port team aren’t there, the port magician / fixer did say perhaps you should be weekdays when we’re here . anyway just a good news I got to have chemo update and thank you for the support
