Hi all
I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer last August and have undergone chemo radiotherapy. I was tested following the treatment and I was told I was in a percentage of people who have a total response. Following biopsies were clear too. I now been given the option to go down the Watch and Wait pathway or have surgery. I need to make the decision by Monday and I’ve been thinking about it for a couple of weeks without coming to a decision.
I have discussed this with my surgeon who points in the direction of watch and wait. I am concerned as I was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018 and still have scans every 4 months so this would possibly put more anxiety on me. Some of my family think the surgery is the best way to go.
i have read through the watch and wait thread from a few years ago but is there any more up to date information that may help me?
Thank you

Hi Mags56
Unfortunately I don’t think we do . You could phone our helpline staff to see if a nurse was available to chat it through with .
I do feel for you . But they might be able to help you weigh it up . Would you have a permanent stoma ? I can’t remember off the top of my head .
I am obviously biased on this one with my mum’s history so would not like to influence in any way .
Take care ,

Thanks for replying Court
it wouldn’t be a permanent stoma so that’s something to think of. Either way there are pros and cons so i have to trust myself in making the right decision for me.
i have read up about your mum and it’s always lovely to hear positive outcomes. It’s wonderful.

Hi Mags,
I had a radiologically complete response in 2018 and chose to go on watch and wait and fortunately so far I am clear. I have just had my five year CT scan and am awaiting results.
I have no symptoms and live a normal life and I'm very glad I did it. Check out my profile for more details of my journey.
It can be stressful, for instance whilst waiting for the CT results, I have just been diagnosed with HSP, a blood rash which in adults can sometimes be associated with cancer, but I think it is equally stressful going through surveillance after surgery.
Watch and wait was definitely the right choice for me, but obviously it is horses for courses and it might not be the right choice for you.
Good luck whatever you decide.
Best wishes,
Jogey
Hi Jogey
im sorry I’ve not got back before now.
thank you for your reply to my question, I did check out your journey and your experiences helped me think through my options. I decided to go on the watch and wait pathway and have just had my 3 monthly check. Sigmoidoscopy results appear good but waiting for MRI results now.
I hope the blood rash you have been diagnosed with is nothing too serious and that you are feeling well.
Take care
