Confused and have to make decision

Hi there

i have posted on here before and got some great help and replies from people.

I had a polyp removed from my rectum all along they said benign then when tested after removal I was called in and told cancer.  A bit of a shock to say the least.

they have said removed but not sure if microscopic cells been released.  Therefore I have two choices watch and wait which is check up and mri every three months or have the ELAPE operation.

i have meeting next week with surgeon/consultant again to give my decision and currently I have no idea what to do.

has anyone else been in this position also anyone’s experience of the ELAPE op like recovery times etc.

I am just so confused as I thought all ok then had the sudden shock.

  • Hi. Cornishluc, sorry to hear of your dilemma. My tumour was 2.5cm which did not give me a choice. If I had I would have gone for the check ups however I would also discuss additional options to monitor to help alleviate your anxieties going forward with your consultant on which you should insist.  Ask for a Pet scan before you make a decision that would show up any hot spots such as lymph nodes or other potential problems. Also ask for blood tests re cancer markers unless you’ve had those done already. Make sure your bloods are repeated at regular intervals. Being proactive is your best approach. Stay positive.

  • Hi thanks for your reply I kind of wish they hadn’t given me the choice.

how are you getting on, how did recovery from ELAPE go for you.

I am gathering lots of info and writing down lots of questions ready for next week.  No blood tests done and still waiting for CT scan

  • Your welcome. This is a huge decision for anyone to take. There are so many variables that help/hinder your progress and recovery after this type of surgery and mine took a while. Why not PM me.Thumbsup
