Colonoscopy with tortuous colon

Hello all

I dont have an actual question but guess I just wanted to share some thoughts on my situation as it is easier than having them racing around inside my head.

I am new to this forum but have been a member of the bladder cancer forum for several years.

I have been been referred by my doc on the 2wk Lower GI pathway for ‘management advice’ on ‘suspected’ colon/bowel cancer.  This is largely on the basis of a change in bowel habit/some margin weight loss (2-3lbs; I am small anyway). I have also completed a FIT kit and have blood test tomorrow. My doc didn’t find anything of concern with the physical exam - abdo and rectal.  I imagine it is a factor in her referral that I have already had one cancer diagnosis (in 2021) albeit stage Ta, low grade for which I was treated and have been clear since.

I am expecting on the basis of the above to be referred for a colonoscopy. I had one in 2021 when they reported I had a tortuous and spasmodic colon which meant a long and difficult exam.  I am concerned this means I am more at risk of damage to my colon.  I am aware that CT colongraphy exists but I am not sure it is available in my area.

I am worried of course both about the actual colonoscopy and what they might find.  My only thought balancing out this worry is that I had my gall bladder removed 6 mths ago and have had some continuing symptoms in that regard which I know is not uncommon.  I sort of hope my symptoms (loose stools of rather gingery orange colour, early morning and some digestive issues - wind/transient nausea/mild indigestion)  may all be down to post-cholecystectomy syndrome but appreciate my doc wants to rule out cancer.

Anyway, interested in any words of wisdom from you guys (especially about the risks of colonoscopy with tortuous (also known as redundant) colon - and wishing everyone a positive day.

Thank you for reading this.

  • Hi Blue and welcome to the bowel board. There’s a few things that have similar symptoms to bowel cancer such as crohns, colitis, irritable bowel disease and it may well be that this is an ongoing side effect of your gall bladder removal but it’s best to be checked out. Only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer diagnosis.

I’ll be honest - I’ve had to google what a tortuous colon is - so I can’t offer any advice there but I had a telephone pre-op assessment before my last colonoscopy so maybe you could bring it up then or ring the number on the letter once you have your appointment through for reassurance?

    Take care
