Hi everyone hope you’re all well?

I have Ben advised of potential bowel cancer after various tests and poo sample

was told by doctor would have a referal six weeks ago yet still nothing

on calling doctor said specialist said was no need for urgent referal and would be new year at earliset

i have 10 of potential 13 symptoms with positive test for blood internally surely this delay isn’t correct?

im in constant pain, breathless loosing weight and exhausted but can’t sleep due to pain

inalso am bipolar and mental health is hitting rock bottom and no one can give me answes

indont know what to do or how to chase this up and am concerned by the time Colonoscapy is done it will be worse for me and my family

could anyone advise if this is normal and that the wait time is acceptable as doctors now just keep saying sorry and nothing further they can do

many thanks in advance

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about what you are going through, it sounds unusual to me. Have you asked your GP since they would normally be the first port of call. If your GP cannot help then my next port of call would be the PALS department at the hospital (patient advice and liason service).

  • Hi

thanks for replying. As above GP pretty useless and has no answers

  • Hi Colonoscapy.  When I was diagnosed there were 5 key criteria/symptons I think and if the patient fulfilled 2 of these criteria then they were referred under the 2 week rule. If your doctor cannot explain why you have been designated as not urgent then you could maybe raise this with PALS as Steve suggests?

I know this is very worrying for you but please bear in mind that only 1 in every 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer diagnosis. There are many conditions that can cause blood in the stool and similar symptoms to bowel cancer like colitis, crohns, diverticulitis.

Please give the support desk a ring on the number below and have a chat with them?

  • Hi Katen

    thanks for your kind reply.

I wasn’t aware of those stats and are reassuring thank you

im bipolar so having the cancer seed planted in my head wasn’t there best moment tbh and they are being very vague with me

doctor has no explanation as to why just keeps saying could be good news! Could be!! My concern is if left until new year and it IS what we all fear.

I’ve been positive up until last few days when doctors can’t give answers and now not sleeping and constantly going thru every possible scenario

will get there tho as don’t believe in being negative so upward and onward

thank you both for your time and advice very thankful

  • Unfortunately I think the waiting time for colonoscopies can be lengthy but why not give our helpline staff a phone on 0808 808 0000 and they could advise what the acceptable time is and see if this falls within that line .

Bowel cancer can be extremely slow growing . So hold onto that . Some people have it for years and know nothing about it but our message to everyone is get thoroughly checked out so pleased you are perusing it .

Have a chat with our staff . They are wonderful and will help as much as possible .

    Take care ,
