Advice for after surgery

Hi, my husband’s having surgery soon and I was just wondering if you have any advice on anything that could make him more comfortable after surgery- any cushions/supports to help sitting or sleeping or any advice on how to manage a stoma bag.

  • Hi ChrissisJ. Do you know what surgery he is having? If it’s a Low Anterior Resection then he probably won’t need a special cushion. If it’s an Abdominal Perenial Resection then it might be wise to get advice from his nurse as certain cushions can hinder the healing of the incision.

The nurses will make sure that he can deal with the stoma before he’s discharged and he’ll soon get into a routine with it. There’s lots of help and support in the other board if you’ve seen it? If there’s anything in particular that you’re worried about then please ask?

Ileostomy, colostomy, urostomy and any other stoma support

  • Hi ChrissieJ

If he is having an APR, as Karen said, some cushions are not suitable. Don't get a donut cushion. This was recommended to me by a doctor who I had a follow up with after my discharge from hospital. It turned out that it was the worst thing I could have done. Pure AGONY!!!

    Take care

  • I had a LAR and found I needed to sleep with lots of support with pillows almost sitting. As I had  keyhole and open my core muscles were non existent so found ways of managing getting about with a few adjustments it was fine

Karen given great advice and  the link for the Stoma support group here are fantastic. Lots of advice and support there The stoma nurses will sort out products and advice your hubby on sorting self out  it’s no bother I was enjoying life to the full in no time

A food diary is a great start Im not sure if your hubbys having a colostomy or Ileostomy they’re a little different in what foods are best. If you pop up what operation we can all help
