Devastating news…

I’m so upset. Just found out that it looks like surgery will not be possible on my rectal tumour as the chemotherapy hasn’t shrunk this tumour or the one in liver and two in lungs. My oncologist has yet to speak to the surgeon to confirm, but I’m assuming he will confirm what oncologist had told me. I’m truly devastated. I’m seeing oncologist in a couple of weeks to discuss options. Just wanted to reach out to anyone in similar position. This has absolutely floored me… xxx

  • So sorry for your news. Hope they can find a way forward for you.

  • Hi

I would generally wait on the surgeon to decide . Each specialist knows their own field best and it’s not the first time my mum’s first oncologist told us it was not possible only for the surgeon to say they thought it was doable .

However saying that it took two years of treatment for my mum to get a full surgical option .

What chemotherapy did you have ?

  • Hi Court, thanks for the response. I've had Irinotecan & Capecitabine. Had Liver resection in December to remove a few secondary tumours, but further MRI found an additional small tumour as well as two nodules in lungs. So as a result the surgeon said he couldn't operate to remove primary rectal tumour. Hence further chemo which has shown no further tumours, but not shrunk the existing ones... it's been a long 18 months from original diagnosis. xxx

  • Hi  ,

Has SABR (stereotactic ablative radiotherapy) been considered? I'm starting next week to get rid of 3 small lung nodules and I know they can do it on the liver as well. Because it is very high doses of rays on a small area the idea is to get rid of the metastases completely.

    Thank care

  • Hi

I think that’s really wise input from  . If this is a possibility then it would have the potential to open up other avenues .

You are certainly within your rights to have a second opinion with an interventional radiologist.
    Worth a chat !
