Apical Node Involvement

Can anyone tell me a bit more about the Apical Nodes as I can’t find any information on them at all. My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer which has spread to his liver. His primary tumour was removed and on biopsy 6 out of the 17 nodes have shown cancer. 1 of the 6 is in the Apical and I believe this to not be great but I can’t seem to find anything on what it means or to understand a bit more on what it even is and if this means it’s secondary lymph node cancer or not? Appreciate anyone’s help at all. Thanks

They are part of the lymphatic drainage system near the left colon and I think would be classed as regional lymph nodes in bowel cancer because of their proximity to the colon. I’m not sure of the significance of apical lymph nodes (regional lymph node involvement) in stage 4 bowel cancer. I think the liver metastases is more significant with regard to surgical management and drug protocols. I’m no expert;  I’ve just done a lot of reading since my brother was diagnosed in January.

  • Hi

Really bad images so sorry for that . As you can see they sometimes go under a different name . The image in the first photo shows where they are located . Distant lymph nodes like my mum has showed up in her mediastinal nodes . Check with the dr but I think that’s more what they class as distant lymph node involvement.

  • Thank you both for replying to me! Jask im sorry to hear about your baby brother! My husband is 40 and we have a baby on the way (our first) and life feels scary at the moment with a stage 4 diagnosis but trying to keep positive as lots can be done these days! If ever you need to talk or need help understanding anything, I’m no expert or doctor but also done a lot of research so happy to help in anyway I can. X
