Hello, I am new to the community and struggling to decide whether to have the LAR operation or APER. These were the 2 options I was given. My tumour is 5cm up from the edge of the rectum and is 2.5cm diameter in size. I am worried about the risk of anastomotic leak. Has anyone had experience of this procedure so low down?
Hello Willows
If you click on my name you can read my bio and others. I had a LAR with temporary Ileostomy with no leaks. My tumour was 10cm, It was a long operation which took a while to recover from. Lots of others will be along with APER experience.
It may be and idea to talk to your colorectal nurses who will be fully informed on your treatment plan and can reassure you
Take care
Sending you a hug

Sorry I didn’t ask the measurements although it was taken I really didn’t have the space in my head.
It was low I was borderline between to the two operations
My surgeon had all the measurements from the endoscopy and ultra sound. The finale test was a physical examination which my surgeon decided that I was a candidate for the LAR with a reversible Ileostomy at my consultation
Im sorry I’m not much help might be really good to talk to your nurses and ask if you are a good candidate for a reversal.
Ann
Hi Willows
The bowel squatter was removed leaving me with 2.5cm of rectum. Don’t know how that compares with what would be the case for you post op. All I cared about then and now was the most secure way to send the cancer packing. I was left with LARS post reversal and there’s now loads of advice on the special section of the Stoma site. It’s taken time to find a new normal as regards the throne room, but no regrets now even if I struggled at times.
My biggest and best friend has been Ondansetron, a medication that even proved effective to overcome the side effects of the latest round of chemo ( to deal with liver secondaries ).
Thanks Wellspring. I am not sure what I will be left with but they are fairly confident it will work as the tumour is very small. My op is on the 21st. Not sure if I will have a stoma, will all be down to how they get on on the day.
