Hello everyone, hope you are all keeping well.

My mum has her first chemo appointment on Friday next week and I was wondering if anyone can give any essentials that may be useful to take with us and help during it all.

This is very new to us and I want to ensure she is as comfortable as possible. Given some of the side effects just wondered if taking certain things with us may help.

Thank you xx

  • Hi  . I think I’ve already sent you the link to the chemo post haven’t I? If not let me know and I’ll send you it.
The actual treatment can take 2-3 hours sometimes longer so something to read or listen to. I was offered tea and biscuits but you could take a sandwich or snack. It could be a bit chilly at this time of year so maybe a thick cardi or something to put round her shoulders.

When it comes to leaving the unit this can be where you have to be careful. Oxaliplatin can cause strange reactions to the cold. Touching anything cold can cause a tingle so gloves are a must and the cold air can also cause the face and lips to twitch so a hat and a scarf to cover the mouth. It might help to have a flask of something warm to drink too. Cold drinks should be avoided as it can be like drinking broken glass or even make the throat feel like it’s constricted - it can be alleviated with a warm drink but it can be a bit panicky initially.

Her arm may feel sore after the iv so a heat pad or wheat bag can help - sometimes the nurses will offer these during the treatment if she feels that it’s starting to hurt.

Hope this doesn’t all sound too scary but it’s good that you’re prepared.

    Take care

    Karen x
