Mum's Bowel Cancer update

So Wednesday I was just so happy my mum's op went well how things have changed in the matter of days.... my mum seems to have gone down hill.

She was vomiting a lot all brown sorry for the details and also her tummy is like a balloon.

They sent her down to CT last night at 8pm and although no doctor has been to see her due to it being a weekend a specialist nurse went to see her just before I arrived to say the CT looked OK no sign of a leak etc.

However my mum's Bowel has become lazy apparently she has opened her bowels but only because they are giving her laxatives to try encourage it to start opening up. They have also said the bloating is because of wind and due to her bowel not functioning on its own it isn't coming out the way it should.

She had an NG tube in yesterday to help with the sickness and bloating but today she was taking little sips of water the nurse did say if she was sick again it has to go back in.

She appears so poorly and I honestly thought we would seeing signs of her coming home soon but cannot see that happening yet.

She is also nil by mouth at the moment as they said the bowel needs rest but I cannot see how bowels can even open of ur not eating. She last ate Thursday morning.

Such a worry

  • Hi

I feel for you . I remember this stage well and expected mum to start improving daily but it took longer .

My mum was very bloated . She was in for eleven days . Her dr will have a good look at her tomorrow and you could phone in the morning and raise your concerns with the staff but it did take my mum a bit longer too . I was overwhelmed by it but years later she has actually little memory of it .

I would have said the first five to six days were tough . Then some improvements.
Hold on tight . They will help her . I hated the weekends . Always a relief to know the consultants were around .

    Take care ,

  • Yes honestly tomorrow cannot come quick enough. I just want signs of her getting better I know we are only 4 days post op but seeing her like it I really wasn't prepared for. X

  • It is still very early days for her . Some people do get some more post op issues to overcome than others . My mum was definitely a bit slower than some of the recoveries I read about but she got there and after two weeks things were entirely different. I don’t think I realise just how big a surgery it was before hand .

Its not easy to watch but you are doing a wonderful job and she will get there . Before you know it you will have her discharge date and preparing to take her home .
