Small Bowel Symptoms?

Im 32 and have had lower/middle right, abdominal discomfort/pain for a year (last year when it started I had nausea and a change in stool habits), I happened to have a UTI this October which lasted for over a month after my first treatment of antibiotics, so my GP ordered blood work and it came back with severe iron deficiency anaemia (ferritin 4, haemoglobin 90). I must admit I never look at my stool, but I have since noticed little black granules on the toilet roll. I had a colonoscopy on Thursday and everything in the colon looked fine (they took biopsies to be safe and I’m waiting for results). I think a CT scan of the small bowel is next, but it doesn’t seem to be common for anything to be found there? I’m just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience,  or ideas about what could cause these symptoms, as I can’t find much information about anything other than the colon.

  • Hi . If you type small bowel in the search box at the top of the screen then it will bring up previous posts but to be honest I think I’d wait for the biopsy results and the CT scan rather than trying to self diagnose? The dark bits could be old dried blood from something like a pile or polyp that’s been aggravated a bit and bled and it’s reassuring that the colonoscopy looked fine

  • Thanks for your response.  Yes you are right, I’ve just been so stressed and scared, and it’s the not knowing that is the hardest. Probably just waiting and not thinking into it would be the best, it’s just so hard to do. I’m not sure whether I’m in the clear or still need to have my guard up, and I feel so ill.

  • Hi,

When I was 50 I ended up in hospital with what they thought was appendicitis and because of my age sent me for a colonoscopy all was clear.
Fast forward till I was 58 same symptoms as before emergency operation found bowel blockage diagnosed with Crohn’s and small bowel cancer. The consultant said I must of had Crohn’s for at least 15 years and it had turned into a polyp then small bowel cancer. I said to the consultant I had a colonoscopy 8 years ago and my bowel was clear. He said they would not have saw the cancer in your small bowel as they only look in your large bowel during a regular colonoscopy. And the Ct scan only showed I had a blockage.
