Hi All, My husband has been in hospital for over a week after a bowel resection. Although he didn't plan to, the consultant gave him a stoma. That will not work properly yet. They are planning to feed my husband via a tube today as he has lost weight. Has anyone else had this problem? They say its all just time. I'm wondering if his age of 75 is against him.

  • Hi

I could not believe my mum had anything wrong with her ( picked up on a bowel screen) we had been re landscaping her front garden and moving wheelbarrows of soil and stones around the week before she was diagnosed!
Little did we know she had a big spread in her liver ! Yikes !
I gave her time to recover though afterwards. But do have a photo where I caught her under the roofline of her home , balancing at the top of a ladder , not holding on with her hands , wee toes with neuropathy doing all the work whitewashing her house ! Could not believe it ! She had a sun hat on for protection though !

I took a photo and reported her to my sister ! Grinning.

Dont give yourself a hard time as you really did not know !

    Take care ,

NA .... it sounds like a pretty normal relationship to me. My wife works part time, does most of the housework and cooking etc..Most of the time I get it easy.

  • WHEW !!!!  Good report today. He has had yoghurt, icecream, soup and drinks today and stoma is working well!!! 2 weeks tomorrow since his operation.

  • Hello, my partner was in hospital for 18 days after his bowel op which included a stoma.  It took a while for the stoma to work and he had a feeding tube for quite a while after surgery.  He lost about 2 stone while in hospital.   It eventually started working, he came home and then didn't let it hold him back.  Despite the advised bland diet, he couldn't do it as he was dairy intolerant and loved his varied diet too much.  He bit the bullet and kept on with his love of spicy food and roast dinners etc and was fine.  The stoma got blocked only once and I had to take him to hospital.  A doctor massaged it and the block was sorted.  After that he had no problems.

I know people will have problems with carrying with their pre op diet, but Nic wasn't willing to let it stand in the way of living his life as normally as possible.

Take care and I hope your husband is now recovering and things are improving.

Hi NA, I hope your husband has been sorted out by now. With cancer never expect a straight forward journey. Surely he will be getting home soon?

i have ended up in hospital since Friday after getting my flu jab on Wed 28th Oct. I did get ct scan results and the 2 tumours have reduced in size .. a bit. So I have had 7 Folfiri chemos and it appears to be working. Relief!

Good luck at your end. I’m hoping to get home today.
