Hi I'm 6 weeks post op laparoscopic colonic anterior resection, op went well, awaiting chemo but just want to ask - when I poo its very thin (size of little finger) and I keep getting constipated, is this normal? thanks in advance

  • Hi Planky,

Just a note to say I had my operation in January & finished chemo in May & my toilets still aren’t regular… I can go from extremes of one day being constipated to having urgent diarrhoea the next.

I actually picked up a wee card at the Macmillan centre last Friday that says I might need a toilet urgently because of cancer treatment (for businesses etc)

Worth mentioning at your next appointment, but know you are not alone.

  • Hi Suzy

Many thanks for your reply it has made me feel a bit better I think it doesn't help as its stressing me out.

    Glad your on the mend

    Ta Planky

  • I hear ya!!

Everything was stressing me out too! I had a bit of blood between appointments at one point & nearly went doolally with stress! But the doc assured me it was VERY normal for this to happen at a bowel cancer clinic! (Which calmed me down no end) & in hindsight I think I wasn’t drinking enough water Droplet

Before all this I didn’t realise the importance of drinking enough water. They even sent me for a heart scan at the beginning because they thought they heard a murmur, & the nurse doing the scan said dehydration can give you a murmur! Cue the water intake increase!

Sometimes the smallest of things can make a big difference :-)

  • Hi, , 6 weeks isn't long for the huge assault you have had on your guts!! Mine were very variable for nearly a year, but it was liveable with. You learn not to panic, and take dulcoease if you haven't pooped in a day or so. It takes a while to get to a new normal.

Agree about the toilet card, though I did use my chemo card once to gain quick access to a disabled toilet. Take care

  • Cheers for your reply and the heads up taking your time to reassure me, hope all is going well with you
