Hi, could anyone tell me if they have had part of the bowel removed, so surgery whilst also having lung and heart conditions. (Preferably both) just wanted to see how the operation went and the care you received afterwards.... Still worrying about my dad and this is a big one playing on my mind, will his body will take the stresses /strain of a big operation with heart conditions? Surely they wouldnt operate if they didnt feel it safe to do so? Can anyone give me any information on this kind of  situation please. Thank you.

  • Hi

My understanding of this is the anaesthesiologist makes that assessment with the help of other specialists at the pre assessment stage . They would involve cardiology etc to make a full assessment of his heart function if there was doubt .

This is a very legitimate concern you have and best to get reassurance from his team . Your dad can ask his surgeon or at his pre op assessment if they can ensure this is all covered . I have seen many people here go for more extensive checks , requested by the anaesthesiologist to ensure they are fit for surgery !
If your dad emails his surgeons secretary to raise his concern .

The other aspect to consider the same anaesthesiologist do different surgery lists like trauma where complex cases present themselves all the time . If you can contact his team I am sure they will be able to talk your dad through the complexities of this decision from their insight into your dads medical history and their experiences and knowledge.

Regarding post op care you will notice people having surgery cancelled as there was not a High dependency bed available. That back up is there to assist patients should complications arise ! My own mum went to ICU for a few nights after one procedure and High dependency for the other two surgeries . ICU has a nurse literally dedicated to the patient and was constantly at the end of my mum’s bed , even during visiting ! Consultants are well staffed .
The high dependency is also very well set up with highly trained staff . Once they are stable and recovering well they get transferred to the surgical ward . The staff deserve medals in surgical wards in my opinion.

It was only much later on that my mum told me she remembers very little of all !

My mum had one extensive procedure where we were told her risks of death . Much higher than all the other procedures she had . They talked extensively about the risks , also how they would manage them if they arose and the possible outcomes. It left me dismantled to be truthful , however the other aspect , I suddenly felt immediate trust as he was in pain to make sure we understood the enormity of the decision and  made a fully informed choice . I felt he was sincere and thorough and I wanted a surgeon like that ! However it was a case of moving forward without too many great options for sure !

Just my own take on things. Others will have different opinions !

    Take care ,
