My husband was diagnosed last March with bowel cancer which we found out in October had spread to his liver, then in November was told it had also spread to his lungs. He had an operation to remove the tumor in his bowel and had a big infection so has had his rectum removed and has a stoma for life. He started chemo in December until the end of February. He then had a scan and we have just got results. We are very shocked to learn not only has the chemo not worked, but the tumors in his liver have actually grown with no difference to the tumors in his lungs. They said the tumors have mutated. They have offered him encorafenub and cetuximab to try and shrink them but said he has a median life expectancy of 9 month, and he could get longer if he responds well to the new treatment. Has anyone else had this awful news but has done well? I have read some amazing stories here of people living far longer than expected. I am very upset n worried about thus but am trying to stay positive, but it is hard to do so on hearing this news.
Any advise would be good and I hope everyone is doing OK.
Hi
Welcome to the forum . I am sorry to read about your husbands recent scan results .
I take it your husband has Kras mutations as I have not encountered the drug he is on before . But see it’s specifically for Kras mutation . So that may be a more targeted and appropriate treatment plan for him . It might also be good to know if he is MSI as that would open up possible Immunotherapy treatments for the future .
To answer your question we have had people here who do better on second line therapy than first line treatment. Absolutely no idea why but it does appear that some people get a better response.
In terms of getting a difficult prognosis . If you click on my username you can read my mum’s story . Often one step foreword just to receive another blow ! She was diagnosed back in 2009 and options were considerably less ! However one step in the right direction and seeking out windows of opportunity really changed things .
Like I said I have never seen this targeted therapy before and maybe that’s a very hopeful thing given it’s specifically for Kras mutations !
I wish him every success with his new plan and hope it leads to other options .
Take care ,
Court

Hi my tumours grew on first line treatment but I got a second opinion as I lost faith in the first oncologist .my second oncologist didn’t give up on me but started me on 2nd line treatment and I paid for avastin too .My tumours didn’t shrink but they stopped growing so I had surgery .I am 18months in clinical remission .All tumours are different and tumour biology is very influential on how well treatment will go .My cancer probably started in my appendix which resulted in a massive mesenteric secondary although they aren’t 100% sure .Ask every question, never give up .Good luck .We all deserve it x
