Keyhole surgery pain

It's been over 6 weeks since my rectal surgery. 1.5cm NET. I was told next to no pain after. I was in pain, but it was kind of expected really after any surgery. So I wasn't worried. I used to have pain before the surgery, but was also told my tumor wouldn't have caused any pain. It definitely did.

The only problem is that it's now been over 6 weeks and I was told I'd feel better every day... I haven't felt much difference over the space of weeks. The pain isn't very horrible, but it's almost always there and it is strong enough for me to be really fed up by now. I've been in pain every single day since the operation. Got worse in the last 3 days. I'm mentally exhausted and a little worried too.

Sometimes going to the toilet leaves me crying on the floor from the pain too, but that goes away in 15 minutes.

I can't sit for long, can't walk even for 20 minutes, can't find a comfortable position to lie in. Basically no comfort. I have normal bowel function, no constipation at all. No bleeding or anything like that.

Post op nurse and GP are aware, they suggested stronger painkillers.

Just gone on solpadol, as normal painkillers stopped working. Bath helps but not for long, hot water bottle too.

Has anyone experienced this? By now my internal stitches should have all dissolved and yet I feel a fair bit of pulling there and persistent pain in rectum and in my back. Is this normal?

I found loads of scientific studies, but they all just compare TAMIS to other procedures. Only one study mentioned well-being actually checked after the operation. And that only mentioned rectal function, not pain.

Any info or experience you could share would be amazing.

  • Hi ,

Just wondered if your actual surgeon is aware how you are getting on . Have you had a post op follow up ? If not you could always email his/ her secretary. I think they might want to know about the extent of that .
The hospitals do run pain clinics which look a bit more closely at what’s causing the pain .
Our helpline staff are also able to assist and might be able to give you some guidance. 0808 808 0000.

Think it’s only reasonable to know if that’s within the realm of normal or needing some other investigation. Even just to give you reassurance and some assistance.

    Take care ,

    Thank you Court.

I only just had my follow up. The surgeon examined me externally and found a small tear. For which I'm going to get medication once the prescription comes through on Tuesday.

I felt better this week prior to the follow up, but last night I was on the floor from painAs with the internal pain, the surgeon only said it was either bone or muscle and didn't examine internally. They said it's not the stitches. I'm just hoping I'll get better by treating the first problem (the tear) though I'm not entirely convinced it's the same thing. What else can I do.

I felt better this week prior to the follow up, but last night I was on the floor from pain, crying and feeling really upset about it, though it could have been from my recent gyno appointment (which was very painful, as they sometimes are).

Called post op team a few weeks ago who just told me to get stronger painkillers from my GP. Those far outweigh any benefits, they made me feel properly drugged up and generally unwell and unable to complete any tasks at all. To the point I wasn't able to say a coherent sentence. I'm much better off with the pain than with something so horrible (and that was just one pill).

What I was just prescribed could cause more dizziness etc but I'm hoping I'll be fine & that it will help with all the internal and external pain.
