Hi everyone, hope all is OK.
I was discharged from hospital yesterday evening after my RC last Wednesday . My surgeon was happy with my progress and found no further need to keep me.
Iam at home now getting used to my new way of life. Its been some journey the past four months and all of you have been part of it.
It's going to be so strange for a while having Sidney (that's the name I've given my stoma) but iam sure we'll get along just fine.
Thanks for all the messages I was sent last week after the operation I do greatly appreciate them.
I'll be taking it easy for the next while but will be back on the forum more regularly offering what support I can to those in a similar situation.
Thanks again for everything
Best wishes
Mark
Hi Mark,I’m glad you are back home now.I’m sure you will get used to Sidney quickly.I think it’s easier to manage a stoma at home than in hospital. You will grow in confidence with practice and there are options if you find the stoma bags don’t suit.Your stoma will change shape so make sure you measure it often.I used the plastic bit that you pull off the back of the bag as a guide to cut the bag hole the correct size. You will get leaks if you don’t keep an eye on the stoma size.Once your stoma has settled to its regular size you can order pre cut bags if you prefer.Rest when you need to as your body does need it to fully recover.Eating little but often is best. It’s common not to feel hungry to begin with.Bowels can be a bit erratic.Take it easy but try to walk a little each day building up your walking distance gradually.Love and best wishes Jane x
Thanks Jane
I got a template home with me with different sizes for stoma which I cam use to check the size. I have a couple of stoma nurses coming out to see me and keep an eye on it.
It feels so strange having it there but I'll get used to it there's no other choice lol.
I think I've been pretty lucky. My bowels moved the day after surgery and I was walking about the ward everyday. I had no trouble putting down the hospital food. Fingers crossed it all continues in this vain.
Best wishes Jane
