Hello all thought I would post my thread regarding my very recent NHS experience and Bladder cancer
On the 21st of October I was a referred to the Urology Department of RUH Bath for a one stop screening for Bladder cancer, in the space of 2 hours I had CT scan with contrast, Ultrasound, Pathology, Cystoscopy which showed a tumour of 2cm with 4 satellite's of 1cm. Ending with a Pre Op assessment.
I was quickly offered elective surgery on the 17th November at the Day Surgery Unit RUH bath, admission was at midday and the TURBT took place at 2.30pm.
Yes when you wake up from the general anaesthetic it stings a bit but to be expected, I was seen by the Consultant shortly afterwards informing me that all tumours had been successfully removed and instillation of mitomycin C into the bladder was carried out.
A follow up appointment has been set for three weeks time to discuss the histology results
Once the catheter had been removed and I could pass urine successfully on 3 occasions (although bloody) I was allowed to go home I was also provided with an opioids for pain relief and was encouraged to use it as required.
So all in all I can sing nothing but praise for the NHS and Staff at RUH Bath.
Hello Pikey
As a patient your experience is what everyone of us should have. My journey was quick but with more appointments before the surgery date. The one stop shop should be adopted by all hospitals.
Sending you all my best wishes for your Pathology results in three weeks.
Take care and look after yourself after the surgery.
Love Ade xx
Hi Ade,
My hospital has a 1 stop shop and it worked very well to get them to see me and do the TURBT. It's just they didn't give me a diagnosis for weeks after. I would probably have been informed after the TURBT it it wasn't muscle invasive as I'd have had the instillation and a chat with the surgeon at my bedside.
But as they couldn't do that it had to wait for the investigation of what they managed to scrape out and then it was much more formal. I'm hoping they've improved but in any case I've registered my interest in the hospital patient feedback set up and, now I know how it can work elsewhere, will try and see if they can improve things
