I have an operation on the 3rd of January 2024 as they suspect I have a small type of bladder cancer.
I have many symptoms and family history.
Any ideas on what to expect etc sorry for asking so late but it's starting to hit home now.
HHi Damo_wales . Welcome to the group and no need to apologise for anything. We know where you are coming from and we understand. The probable op you are booked in for is called a TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour). It sounds worse than it is. Usually done in day surgery but prepare for an overnight. The offending cells are scarped away using a rigid cystoscope . Biopsies are sent for analysis and the results determine the next step. There will be a few weeks waiting for the results. It will sting when peeing for a few days and you need to take on board plenty of water. Be aware, bladder cancer can be treated successfully and many of us have been there. Feel free to ask anything. Best wishes.
Thank you so much for getting back so quick. And again sorry left it so late asking. I'm just starting to worry now as I went on my own to the consultations, and to be honest it all went over my head. My manager told me about this so hence why I joined.
They mentioned I may be in over night will they not know there and then? Sorry if a silly question. Or will I have to wait. As they said a high probability?
Hi Damo_wales . They will not be able to confirm if cancer or not until the biopsy results are in. They may give you an idea but consultants can be reluctant to commit to any answers on the spot. In some cases you may even be discharged without seeing the surgeon again. It is a waiting game and there is a lot of waiting in our world. Whenever you have any consultation you can request to be copied in to the notes. It makes things a lot clearer when in black and white. Best wishes.
Hi,Welcome to the group.I hope you find it helpful and supportive.Good luck with your op and let us know how you get on.Best wishes Jane
I think rily has given a pretty comprehensive answer but just know you are not alone. I've recently gone though this (Nov 28th). In my case though they did a kidney stone removal at the same time. It did sting when I peed for about a week after and don't be alarmed if there is blood in your urine for the first few days (possibly longer but if it is longer seek advice from you doctor as it may be an infection and require anti-biotics)
In my case I think it was about 4 weeks before I was told the result. I probably could have chased it earlier but I didn't.
All the best for today, drinking lots of water after your procedure will help to stop the stingy wee!
Xx
