Hi.My husband Al (56) has had a recent diagnosis of bladder cancer. 2 cm tumour, not sure what type, they didn’t say…he had blood in his urine on my birthday (20 Sept) got GP appointment same day and was in the urology clinic 2 weeks later. Unfortunately they didn’t have time for all tests so we were back again 10 days later. When they called me in i still didn’t expect to hear ‘ it’s cancer’. He’s so fit and healthy. We’ve been off work- he has a horrendous cough and I’m in half term. But it’s been awful. We have a date for his TURBT but also waiting for a chest x Ray as he’s been coughing for months…I now just can’t wait until they get the tumour out of him and we find out what we’re dealing with. So scary.
Many of us have been through what Al is just starting, and some of us also recently. It has taken me a few months to get past the shock surrounding the symptoms and what seemed like a “sledgehammer” diagnosis. The TURBT is not easy but recovery occurs relatively quickly. Stay strong and feel free to ask any question.
Hi Redunicorn and a warm welcome to the group, although sorry to hear your husband may have bladder cancer. We don't usually hear of a cough being associated with bladder cancer but the x-ray will see if anything is untoward. Do not be alarmed if he is also called for a CT scan, this is standard. A TURBT procedure is usually done in day surgery, but prepare him for an overnight. Biopsies will be taken and then a further wait for results. The results will then determine the next step. The early days of not knowing and uncertainty can be the worst and we never get used to all the waiting. Lots of us have been through this so feel free to ask any questions or just talk. Best wishes.
Hi Redunicorn,
Welcome to the group and I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis.
I thought I was pretty fit, didn't smoke etc (51 years old) and got diagnosed almost a year ago. I didn't have a cough, but was passing blood.
You can check my profile to see what happened to me regards to tests and procedures which I believe is pretty common.
I have my 4th TURBT on 10th November, just to make sure the cancer hasn't come back.
Of course my experience might be different to your husband, but they do seem to follow suit...
I wish you and your husband the best of luck and keep us updated. This forum helped me massively when I started my journey. Just hearing from others that are going through or have been through this helped me.
