Blood clots in urine. Cystoscopy tomorrow

Hi all,

new here.  Six months ago I started peeing blood clots.  I had both a ct and cystoscopy and everything was normal.  The ct showed a very enlarged prostate pushing into the bladder and the doc assumed this was causing the clots.  Urine went back to normal after 3 weeks.  9 days ago I started peeing blood clots again.  My doc said it was probably the same issue.  Not feeling assured as the clots are scary I went to a highly touted urologist.  He said clots were most likely from the prostate but could be bladder cancer.  He is doing a cystoscopy tomorrow to check using blue light.  I am so overwhelmed with anxiety.  Not sure what expect.  Anyone dealt with this?

  • I experienced many blood clots and was passing (with much difficulty at times) large clots prior to my diagnosis of bladder cancer. The blood in the urine was intermittent for about four months before the condition became much worse progressing to complete blockage. I also had bladder stones that I originally thought caused the bleeding and clots but the primary culprit was the bladder tumour. I was prescribed tamsulosin (Flowmax) before the diagnosis to help pass the stones (and clots) which I thought at the time meant that I had an enlarged prostate, but I discovered in the weeks afterward that my prostate was never the problem. My experience may not be the same as yours so please don’t assume this is your trajectory as well. I can strongly recommend to you not to worry too much but you will anyway until the cystoscopy is done which will give you a clear answer and immediately regarding whether you have a tumour in the bladder or the problem is elsewhere. Hang in there my friend.

  • Yes, I had blood clots and pee like Coca Cola just a year ago so I’m still fairly new here.  It turned out I have bladder cancer but it is a low grade, not muscle invasive and under control although it is recurring and I will need regular checks, removal of growths and laser blasts.  I suffer no ill effects and I lead a normal life.  Keep your chin up until the results of your tests establish what the cause is and be assured there will be plenty of experience here to help you along.  In the meantime, try not to worry too much and drink plenty of water to flush yourself out.

  • Hi  and welcome to the group. Good advice from above. Blood in pee can be caused by various things but still needs to be investigated. A blue light cystoscopy is a very efficient way of seeing anything untoward in the bladder. I hope all goes well tomorrow. Keep us posted. Best wishes.

  • Any idea how to handle the post scope urination nightmare?  Would 3 ibuprofen’s do it?

  •  . I have had many flexible cystoscopies over the years and usually the post peeing pain for me only lasted several hours. I never took any painkillers but the main advice is to drink lots of water afterwards to help stop any bacteria building up . Best wishes.

  • rjh18 I would check with staff or the Macmillan nurse line if ibuprofen is the best thing to take, and if so how much. As ibuprofen can cause stomach ulcers by creating an acid effect, I personally would be a little cautious in case it were to be irritant on the bladder. You might get advice to take some paracetamol and some ibuprofen as they work differently. Whatever you do check with someone qualified eg a decent pharmacist before you go popping any sort of pills.

Don't forget the non-invasive things like a good old hot water bottle. It can be any bottle that's safe to hold hot water wrapped in a thick jumper, doesn't have to be a flat rubber thing.

    Hope you soon feel better,
