Still feels like its not really happening to me, as still feel well…. Accept for a very weak bladder since the op… cant go anywhere if theres not a toilet handy… wondering will this effect the BCG vaccines ? Know very little about all this, and dont want to read too much it…. Taking each day as it comes at the moment
Hi FR61 and welcome to this supportive group. Good to know you have got to the stage of beginning follow up treatment. Not had BCG myself, but have been here long enough to know that you cannot predict how you will react. Some people sail through it while few have nasty side effects. In the main though most people have mild reactions. The nurses will let you know how a weak bladder may be affected. I read your earlier post in New to Community where you say you have not head of bladder cancer before. You are not alone as few people have, even though BC is always in the top ten of dozens of cancer types but gets little publicity. I hope all goes well with your treatment and I am sure others will be along to share personal experiences. Best wishes.
Hi FR61
I've now had 15 BCG treatments and although everybody is different, for me it hasn't been too bad.
With the first one you'll be asked to remain in the hospital for the two hours you need to hold the BCG in your bladder to see if everything's ok but subsequently you can go home and release there, providing you've done your two hours.
I've found the insertion of the catheter uncomfortable but never painful and you don't notice the BCG going in. I do have some side effects each time, needing to urinate often, stinging when I do go, passing blood and debris and my bowels are uncomfortable. All this, apart from the stinging which lasts a couple of days, is done and dusted within 6 hours and I'm fit enough to go running the following morning.
Good luck with your treatment and if I can help in any way get in touch.
Pete
Halfhorse, you dont make BCG sound too bad at all, so thankyou for that The side effects you experienced after the BCG, sounds just the same as what I had after my op. And all the time I had my catheter in ( For ten days ) the running to the loo and constant stinging is just about easing off now…. It took a while but starting to feel normal again, so will make the most of the next couple of weeks before I start my first round of BCG on the 8th.. Take care
