I have just been diagnosed and I am waiting for an operation date

Most of the posts on here are about or from men

I would love to hear from women who have had treatment

  • Hi, just passing by. Yes, does seem more common in men, but plenty of females too, of all ages. I was diagnosed nearly 12 years ago.

I am guessing you are waiting for TURBT to remove a growth? This is usually day surgery and you may wake with a catheter. You can expect frequent & painful urination for a few days afterwards  & you need to take things easy for a couple of weeks or so. Be sure to drink plenty, to flush through. Then there is an anxious wait for the biopsy results before you know what treatment, if any, is needed. BC is very treatable, especially if caught early. Best wishes for yours.

  • Hi Teasswill

Thank you so much for replying, wow 12 years ago, that's amazing and has made me feel much better

Yes - waiting for TURBT date and then I guess waiting for the results will be an anxious time

Hope you continue to be well and BC free. x

  • Hi Tinkerbell221,There are quite a few women on here although it can be hard to tell with user names.Best wishes for your TURBT they are not usually too bad.The waiting is not easy.I used to keep as busy as possible to take my mind off results.People tend to feel less anxious once they know what is happening regarding treatment.I had bladder removal over 3 years ago and got a lot of support and advice from this group.I hope you find it helpful.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi Winkers60

Thank you Jane, I appreciate you taking the time to reply

Hope you continue to stay BC free.  Much love, Tina x

  • Hi Tina,Hopefully you will only be in for the day but sometimes they do keep you in overnight. At my hospital after the catheter came out you had to be able to pass urine 3 times before allowed home.I used to find a hot water bottle helpful after a TURBT plus painkillers if needed and plenty of fluids.Do you have supportive family and friends ? love Jane x

  • Hi Jane

    All useful information, thank you

Yes, I am very lucky,  lots of family and friends who have all offered help and support

Love and best wishes Tina x

  • Hi, I am a 62 year old woman diagnosed last July and I was in complete shock. I thought I was healthy, never went to gp, never took any medication for anything so it has taken sometime to get my head around it. This platform has been so helpful, reading others experiences gives some hope for the future and everyone is very kind and supportive. I have had two Turbt operations to find out the grade, mine was grade 3 PT1 so not such great news and I have just completed 6 Bcg infusions and three Mitomycin infusions at Guys. They recommended I have my bladder removed but to be honest I just did not feel I could face that operation, it may come to that, I really don't know.

I have continued to work in my administration role in the NHS, obviously having to have time off for treatment etc. Most of the time I am trying to feel positive as I feel fine most of the time and feel like I wish someone would say"off you go it's all sorted" but unfortunately it's a case of it all being monitored for life and all that I find difficult and now I am waiting for 6 - 8 weeks for them to have a look at the bladder to see if the treatment has done what it should have. Lots of waiting. I know you have to try and not let it dominate your life and keep healthy and positive.

I wish you well and as you say it does seem more men that it affects but there seem to be quite a few women on this forum. You will get a lot of advice on here, which is useful.

  • Hi Bumblebee49

Thank you so much for replying to my message

I am 61 (just) and like you, assumed I was fit and healthy, haven’t seen a GP in years

I am having my pre-op assessment today and hoping I get a date for my first TURBT soon

In my head having the op is the end of it all but realistically it is probably only the beginning of this scary journey

I live in Kent, and will be seen at my local hospital I hope

Seems like you are 6 months ahead of me regarding treatment but it is lovely to chat to someone who understands

Please let me know how you  get on, and I hope and pray it has been successful for you

Best wishes and much love Tina x

  • Best wishes for your pre op Tina,Love Jane xx

  • I am also in Kent, Orpington. Yes I must say I was so anxious before the Turbt but that wasn't actually too bad. Yes it's a bit of a journey. I wish you all the best. Luck and hope and patience is something we need on the journey and the good advice from others.
