Hi, my 90 year old dad was diagnosed with squamous cell bladder cancer in June last year. He had a TRBT and a short course of radiotherapy in September. All was well for nearly 12 months but then some symptoms re emerged and he had another cytoscopy which didn't raise any alarm bells.
However, in recent weeks my dad has had an ongoing urine infection which has exacerbated symptoms of needing the toilet very frequently. This has not improved with the antibiotics.
My dad cannot go anywhere very far from a toilet and some nights is getting little sleep as he is up as often as every 15 minutes.
I am taking my dad to an appointment with a specialist urology nurse next week but wondered if anyone else out there has had this problem and, if do, what help was offered. At the moment my dad has very little quality of life.
Thank you for reading this.
Hi. I had the same problem. Sent to various hospitals. Nothing could be done for me as my Heart and lungs are a bit dodgy and would not stand up to a long operation. So I finished up with a catheter. It sounds a bit drastic, but I soon got used to it. No problems, I don't think anybody knows I am using a catheter unless I tell them I think your Dad will be pleased to go down this route. OK, I am not 90 but not too far from it. My diagnosis was for Muscle-Invasive and advanced bladder cancer. I wish him all the best and keep your chin up.....Bob
Hi Aitchdee,
Since about 18 months ago i have had to get up in the night to wee a couple of times ocassionally three times. The about three weeks ago i counted my tea and coffee intake. I was drinking between 10 and 12 cups of tea/coffee. I read somewhere that they actually dehydrate you they are a diuretic though this is now being disputed by some.
Anyway i now stick to about 4 cups of either tea or coffee and have the last one at around 6pm. I drink a lot of water, as advised by the consultant that removed my right kidney along with tumour. I've been trying this new drinking regime i've set myself for 4 days now and get up once in the night around 5am hooray.
I don't know if anything i've said here is of any use to your dad but if he drinks a lot of tea or coffee it may help to cut right down and drink more water or Orange perhaps.
Good luck...Del.
Hi Aitchdee. Just to echo Delloo, Coffee, strong tea and fizzy drinks should be avoided. It may sound like a contradiction in the circumstances, but your dad needs to drink lots of water during the day. When some people have frequent urination they fall in to the trap of not drinking in the belief it will stop them going. This has an adverse effect on the bladder. When not drinking enough, the urine becomes concentrated and acidic. This then irritates the bladder causing the feeling of needing to go. Water clears all the plumbing out and leads to more longer satisfying pees, rather than little dribbles. (This info comes from my oncologist). Hopefully the uro nurse may come up with a plan. Best wishes.
Hi Aitchdee
Just a friendly tip, many people find orange just as irritant as caffeine etc that are in tea and coffee. Though it does depend on strength, very dilute squash will not be as acidic as real juice. Some find that cranberry juice capsules help stop bugs clinging to the bladder surface. [Cranberry juice to drink is quite acidic and often loaded with sugar to balance the taste, but the sugar can feed bugs] Also Robinson's Lemon Barley Water, properly diluted, is very good for flushing the system through and easy to get down plenty. It was recommended by my old GP.
Re the infection have the docs bothered to have a sample tested properly [ie not just dipstick for protein] to identify which bugs are your dad's infection? The antibiotics will never work if they are not the right ones for the bugs, and people who have had cystoscopies etc seem perhaps more likely to have rarer kinds of bugs due to the disturbance.
Hope things improve for him soon, keep pushing if not. Don't forget you can call MacMillan too.
best wishes,
Denby
Hello Aitchdee
I am looking after my 83 year old dad who has had two TURBT surgeries resulting in swift blue lighted returns to hospital due to passing pure blood. He cannot have any further treatments as he has a weak heart and kidney and liver damage after getting sepsis after his first TURBT. He has just spent a further 2 weeks in hospital, out on Friday and back into A&E last night which did not result in admission. Dad is obviously having trouble weeing but will not admit such 'weakness ' to anybody treating him. He is experiencing full incontinence which is delivering challenging washing opportunities!! I would love to know how you're getting on and if any of this sounds familiar or just your experiences. Thank you.
My dad had a catheter fitted some weeks ago. While it has helped dramatically with his sleep as he doesn't have to get up every 20 - 30 minutes during the night. On the downside he has had several infections which have been tricky to treat.
A catheter would certainly help the incontinence problems.
Luckily my dad saw the benefits of having a catheter and needed little persuasion to have it fitted.
Hope you can sort things to benefit both you and your dad.
Best wishes,
Thank you Aitchdee, I hope your Dad's infections have been cleared up.
