Hi, my Mum has recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer. She has been given an op date for in about 5 weeks time to remove tumour. All we have really been told at this stage is that it looks like a small tumour in size, but not too much else. It's difficult to know how to feel, what to say, how best to move forward until we know more detailed information. Right now, it doesn't really seem to have sunk in at the moment. Thanks, Pat.

  • . Hi Pat and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear about your Mum. We know a cancer diagnosis affects not only the person, but has reaching effects on loved ones. Firstly, be aware that bladder cancer can be treated successfully. It sounds as though Mum has had it caught early which is a positive. The procedure Mum will have is called a TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour). A fairly straightforward op, usually done in day surgery. Biopsies will be sent for analysis and the results determine the next step. It's good to talk about  these things, so if Mum is happy to talk, it helps everybody. Until the biopsies are in, there is not a lot to know. If Mum  is called for a CT scan, don't be alarmed. It is normal procedure. In the meantime, make sure she is drinking lots of water, at least 2 litres a day. This helps flush out any blood and debris and helps prevent blockages and infections. Try and stay off Google. There is a lot of out of date information out there. Feel free to ask any questions. Lots of experience and support here. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Good morning Pat0783, how are you today ?  you’ll have found rilys comment reassuring. The op you mention is fairly straight forward and nothing to be too worried about, I think I’ve had three or four over the past two years. When you have the result of the biopsy your Mum will feel relieved of the stress knowing the course of any further treatment. Best Wishes, John.

  • Good morning Pat , hope you are well , sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis but as you will find out on this fab group there are people that have had the same diagnosis and can give plenty of advice. I myself have had the same diagnosis, had the op to remove the tumour and a few weeks later a second one to make sure there was nothing left behind and now I’m half way through my first course of treatment s please feel reassured that your mum will get the best treatment for her . , and bladder cancer is very treatable these days with so many different types of treatment available. This group is the best for giving you their advice as they have been or are going through the same thing and they are so helpful, so please don’t feel alone in this stressful time , always someone to talk to here , best wishes to you and your mum x Nelbell
