I am an 85 year old male and completed a 3 year course of treatment in October 2021 for bladder cancer. I am told I am clear of cancer but the BCG treatment has left me with inflammation of the bladder which is causing considerable pain and very frequent toilet visits and very disturbed nights. I have been trying to glean as much information as I can about this problem (which also seems to be known as chemical cystitis).
I would be most grateful for comments/observations from anyone who has experienced this problem.
I saw a urologist recently who has prescribed three drugs - Hiprex, solifenacin and nitrofurantion to try for a 28 day period.
Thanks and would much appreciate any information
Richard
When I was in neo training, I got free supplies, but limited to 4 pads per 24 hours - certainly not enough! If you do decide to buy any, get them from an incontinence supplier online - more brands available, cheaper than Tena. I use ageukincontince.co.uk as I still need to use a light pad at night.
Mostly during night time my bladder locks and am unable to wee, this may go on for a few minutes upto about twenty minutes, it's extremely painful during those periods but does eventually clear. Remains painful for a while. I am sure you all suffer the same thing but I wondered how you deal with it. Oncology nurse claims it is bladder spasm.
Yes I do suffer that some nights, the pain can be quite excruciating. I pace around downstairs, it does take awhile sometimes to release it, mostly happens at night and I also usually get an afterburn from it.
Overnight I thought I'd have a couple of glasses of water to try and head off my pain I suffer when I get up. I know they don't recommend it because it disturbs your sleep which is disturbed anyway. It did work this morning, the pain was more bearable so much so we went shopping this morning, it was still uncomfortable but I felt I actually achieved something.
Have a question for anyone who may be interested.
My first blog I mentioned the medication given me by my consultant. I also am on Tamsulosin and Finasteride so a grand total of five items for bladder problems. What other medication are sufferers on? Would love to know.
Thanks
Can I ask do you find any of these drugs help? I'd be interested if they do.
I have been on these since Monday 21st when I had a private visit to a consultant - the answer is no, nothing has changed. Will let you know of any progress
Mind you it usually takes a few weeks for any tablets to take effect so hopefully they will give you some improvement over time.
