Hi all,
Apologies if this is in the wrong place, very new to all of this.
My husband has just finished 4 weeks of radiotherapy and is struggling to eat and get out of bed. He has a mix between nights of diarrhea and then nights of consipation.
We haven't had much information about what happens next either. He has been told to drink plenty of water but hes on a limited fluid intake because of fluid around the heart.
Any advice hints or tips would be appreciated.
Hi and welcome to the group. Sorry to hear your husband us suffering from post radiotherapy effects. I had 6 weeks of radiotherapy and although I had no problems with the actual treatment, I suffered similar problems after treatment finished, although maybe not as severe as your husband. My bowel problems were in the form of the sudden need to go. I managed ok as long as I knew where the nearest toilets where. The fatigue got me but only lasted for a few hours each day. The fatigue is difficult to explain. It is not like being tired or exhausted. The whole energy drains from your body and leaves you lifeless. Even sleeping does not help. Both the bowel and fatigue problems gradually got better as the weeks went by and I returned to normal. My GP prescribed iron tablets which helped give me a boost and an appetite (over the counter ones no good), so it may be wise to discuss these things with your husband's GP. It is really important to take on plenty of fluids, but with your husband' heart problems, you may need t strike some sort of balance. I hope things improve. The radiotherapy continues working for several weeks after treatment finishes, so they will wait for things to settle down before going for more tests to see how things have gone. Best wishes.
Hi Jtunstall57,A warm welcome from me too,I do hope your gp can help your husband.Love and best wishes Jane
Hi and welcome from me too. Neither I nor my husband [he's the one with bladder cancer] have any experience of radiotherapy. So this is if you like a fringe comment. Going through what he has/is, it must be important that whatever he eats does him as much good as possible. So my tip is as much as you can afford, to get organic food, milk etc for you both. This way you are avoiding toxic pesticides and getting the max trace minerals etc. These are lacking in standard foods and drinks and he needs all the repair material he can get. Always check with a pharmacist before starting any supplements; many people are zinc deficient and this affects appetite too.
Hope this at least gives you something positive to be working on. Veg box type produce is best as some supermarket organic produce is mass-grown in Africa then airfreighted, which doesn't do much for the vitamin content by the time it reaches your plate.
best wishes, Denby
