Good morning everyone, I hope you’re all as well as you can be…
First day back from a trip to Mexico…
unfortunately I have to say it’s the worse holiday I’ve every been on….im gutted…
hotel 10/10
staff 10/10
food 10/10
weather 10/10
why was it so bad then????
my wife decided that I needed a break from life after my BCG journey, last year while my wife and daughter in law and grandson went to Jamaica I stayed at home to look after our dog (Leo) but this year Mrs Nigel wasn’t having any of it. And she was right I needed a break..so off we went, Myself , Mrs Nigel, daughter in law, grandson and at the last minute, Daughter in laws mother…we have met her at a few family functions before and all got on..A friend of Mrs Nigel’s came over from Ireland to look after Leo while we was away…turns out he’s had a better time than we did…( for the purpose of this post I will refer to my daughter in laws mother as “ Oliver Reed” ) so the first red flag should have been the night before the trip, we stayed at the Hilton at Gatwick so to avoid a 3am drive the next morning. Myself and Mrs Nigel got to the hotel to meet up with the others, we couldn’t find them, after a phone call we found them in the “smoking area, for Oliver a fag is always accompanied by a rum and coke..so what you may think, they are on holiday too, it’s not all about you Nigel….now I’m the type of person who can let most things slide and it takes a lot for me to lose it..
so…we are in this amazing hotel and I’m looking forward to a few trips out to the ruins ect…Me and Mrs Nigel would get up early and have a coffee on the beach and watch the Sun rise…beautiful, but Oliver and daughter would have a coffee with a large baileys in it…again each to there own…
so Oliver and daughter in law would disappear for hours on end every day to “get some food which of course means smoking and drinking along the way..
so disappearing for hours on end..I can handle that..it’s their holiday too, smoking and drinking all day, not happy about it but I can deal with that also…
But what sent me over the edge was the way that Oliver and daughter were treating my grandson, he’s a 13 year old boy. He just loves to get into the sea and have fun, he doesn’t ask for anything, his school grades are good, he’s glued to his phone or iPad but what kid isn’t these days…for him a holiday is about the sea, food and ipad. So during the nightmare, Oliver and mother are asking Mrs Nigel ( she’s Italian ) at what age do they let kids try alcohol in Italy… 18 says Mrs Nigel knowing what Oliver was thinking..they kept constantly pecking at him…he hates alcohol, due to seeing what it has done to his friends fathers…(Another story)
the blow up….so around 10 days in im finally at boiling point….and boy did I let them have it…I told them how they have spent more time away from our grandson than with him…I was embarrassed to be with them, the resort was all inclusive and they got their moneys worth.. every evenings meals was fully loaded plates of food which was rarely finished with loads of drinks..how can you bring your son/Grandson away with you and just ignore him throughout the day then pick at him in the evenings when he says he’s bored…for him watching the entertainment while drinking and smoking wasn’t his thing..even Mrs Nigel said she hadn’t seen me this angry for many years…he’s here at ours now for a few days,
so I will never go away with daughter in law and Oliver again, my relationship with daughter in law will never be the same either, the only reason I’m civil to her now is because of grandson…( must just add, that the blow up happened while grandson was in the sea) he doesn’t know what’s happened…im so happy to be home away from the toxic two…this morning I got up and had a coffee on my little balcony with Leo in my arms having a cuddle…it was magic…grandson is asleep still .9.30am, Mrs Nigel is at work and I’m taking the “dogmother” back to the airport this morning..
the nice side of me says that it’s just a case of not getting along with the other two and that their idea of a holiday was different to mine..
the not so nice side of me thinks they are a pair of selfish so and so who don’t realise what an amazing kid they have in there lives…
Mrs Nigel has also said that she has never seen daughter in law treat her son like that..a completely different person to last year..
obviously I can’t put down all the explicit language that I would like to but trust me when I say it was horrendous…
next year if we go away it will just be Myself Mrs Nigel and grandson if he wants to…
and breath…
I’ve just read this back and to be honest I think I’ve been kind in my assessment of how they behaved…it was a lot worse…
love to you all The Nigel’s…xxxxx
Oh dear,
Well of course you were quite right (and very patient too - it was well into the stay before you did it, after all.)
There are clearly cultural differences involved and maybe the 2 women don't see each other enough, and perhaps they can't imagine what it's like to be a 13 year old boy but it was his holiday too after all.
I've been on holiday with people I didn't much like, though in our family it's was my husband who, like you says what he thinks, usually at top volume. And not shy of leaving early too. So I might not have said much. But for me smoking isn't something I can put up with, especially after having bladder cancer. And the thought of a child being smoked over is even worse. Outdoors doesn't make much difference.
Have you or your wife asked your grandson if he had a good holiday or if he would have preferred anything different? Perhaps an activity holiday rather than only sun and sea and big hotel with drinking and eating being the big thing. Maybe you could take him and a friend to a more appropriate place next time and ignore the others? By the way I hope you managed to see the ruins?
A pity you had to be involved in a 'Mexican Stand off' when what you needed was a good break.
All the best

Hello Nigel and welcome back. Good for you taking a stand. We usually go all inclusive but I, like you hate to see people wasting food and drinks. I have heard people say it’s all free so I don’t care if I leave it. Mmmmm Just back from golf. So hot today 34 degrees here but no doubt warmer down your way. I bet Leo was pleased to see you! Stay well and calm

Cheers Garviv, the straw that broke the camels back was…our grandson hasn’t really got any male figures in his life apart from me…so I suggested he come away with me for a week…the answer I got was a no due to me not liking the Sun very much (true) so they was concerned that I would be leaving him on his own…that’s when I blew up…
Nigel xx
