Mitomycin C Treatment

After a nervous wait following a recurrence of stage 3 bladder cancer and a second TURBT I will be seeing the consultant tomorrow following the MDT meeting. Unfortunately BCG didn’t seem to work for me and the team was suspicious of muscle invasion. I’ve now seen the MRI summary and it appears that there has been no muscle invasion, so a bit of relief.

So, not sure  what to expect tomorrow and hoping for a 6 week course of Mitomycin C rather than a cystectomy which I suppose is the gold standard. I’ve not lost anny weight and feel good and have my fingers crossed.

We had booked to go away for a month’s very badly needed break and was wondering if anyone has had their Mitomycin  treatment split in to two lots of three. In other words, three before the holiday and three after. Obviously, I would give priority to having a full 6 week course and cancel the break, but wondered if I am talking nonsense?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cant really help much I'm afraid, but as much as I understand thigs BCG is used for more aggressive higher risk tumours and chemo like mitomycin are used for lower risk tumours and less advanced.

Have they discussed potential intravesical chemo treatment with you as an option?

I had a low NMI (grade 2) tumour and several recurrences and mitomycin did not work for me stopping recurrences but it seems the Epirubicin has worked for me this time around.

I would would think they would look at all options before going to a cystectomy especially as its not MI or spread anywhere.

Hope you get some treatment that works and can spare your bladder, but plenty on here have gone down the bladder removal route so sure others in similar situations will pop along soon for you.

I think Mitomycin has to be every week for 6 weeks ideally not sure how a break would affect the efficacy of it tbh.
