  •  Hello. Watching Celebrity South Africa but it’s advert break. Just wanted to ask you all, taking you back to the start of your epic journeys, how you felt when you woke up after your first TRBT your first night or only night as I’m told it will be for me anyway (all being well) in hospital and then when you returned home. Are there unpleasant after effects from that TRBT. Do they last.
  • Hi Mack,

I woke up quite sore with the catheter still in with my leg pumps on, which were quite noisy.

I stayed overnight in the hospital. Boy was I pleased when they took the catheter out and I could walk around.

I guess I was sore for a while during my wees. Plus seeing blood clots and scabs coming out during wees was never pleasant lol

Felt back to normalish after a couple of weeks.

It was the first time I'd ever been knocked out, ( had GA another 9 times since) and my first hospital stay...

Overall wasn't too bad. Although I just wanted to leave and it seems to take an age too be signed out...

    How was yours?

  •  I’ve not yet had mine. 18/05 and to arrive at 11:00 hrs. Hope I’m taken quite quickly. I’ve only been in hospital twice. Both times a life time ago. One stay was in a Maternity Ward. Second stay was for a (nothing sinister) Hysterectomy. So long ago now that I can’t remember if I had any pain or discomfort with that operation.

     Good to be informed. Thank-you.

  • Hi  . My first TURBT I was in for four days, but that was only because they had to go deep. Not long after getting back on the ward I really enjoyed the toast and coffee. I was up and about the next day walking about the ward with no real after effects.

Just a tip. Do not do what I did, The nurse gave me a gown and two small plastic bags. One with elastic stockings and the other with a paper hat, and told me to put them on. I was in a cubicle sitting on the bed with my gown, socks and hat on. The nurse came in looked  at me and then burst in to laughing. She pointed to my hat and said "No, Love. Other end". Turned out it was a pair of paper undies, not a hat. Well, I have only ever seen ops on TV. I could hear the nurses giggling as they wheeled me off to theatre. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  •  . The indignities we go through, we have to do it with a smile on our face. A little bit of humour helps to get through the hard times . Best wishes.

  • Sorry Mack misread..

Best of luck for 18/05. I do remember waiting a while for my slot. During that time I wasn't able to drink ot eat of course, but they now allow us too take sips of water.

If you're dehydrated it can be tricky to find a vein for the GA, so they've changed the non drinking rule a bit.

When I got back to my room, I was fed and given a jug of water which I polished off.

I also had a taste of plastic in my mouth from the tube, that seemed to last a couple of days.

They did quite a few BP tests and ultrasounds on the bladder to check the amount of wee etc.

I was very well looked after and I'm sure you will be also.

My first TURBT was in Dec 2022 and I've been knocked out 10 time's now in total and the worst part is waiting to get signed off so you can leave.

    Best of luck.

    Trevor

  • Haha sorry that was funny. You've got to have a sense of humour right lol...

  • We're all different in how we react & recover. Depends as well if you are first or last on the list ie how long without food.

I was around mid-morning. I felt OK initially, the catheter felt a bit odd but not painful. I had had an instillation of mitomycin as well, which they emptied out after an hour and removed the catheter. The idea was to pee before being allowed home. Coffee and toast were very welcome.

Alas, when I went to pee, the cramping was so bad I had to ring for help and went back to bed in a wheelchair. Also very nauseous. They would have let me go home but because I felt so ill they were happy to let me stay in. A bit odd because it was the Day Surgery unit, not like a normal hospital ward. Anyway they were very kind, gave me anti-nausea meds and by morning I felt OK to leave.

I had frequent urination with cramping after for some days, gradually easing. The effect of the GA made me feel a bit woozy for a week or so. My bladder stayed irritated after that, needing emptying a bit ore often than usual.

Best way to recover is rest and drink plenty.  Hope yours goes well.

  • Laughing Bet you cheered the whole department up with the pants on head trick!
