Hi all.
i have completed 12 bcg treatments now and after each maintenance course of 3 the cystoscopy has shown that I am clear of any recurrence. Up until now, that is.
my last cytology showed some cancer cells and I am booked in for a cystodiathermy. As this is only 3 months since my last cystoscopy and cytology I am hoping that this has been caught at a very early stage. Also, I understand that this procedure is for less serious conditions than Mitomycine and TURBT which I had at the outset a year ago.
Has anyone had a similar turn of events? Is it possible that there are some old stray cancer cells floating around from a while back and have only just broken away? Don’t know how this works’
i feel I am in good hands at Addenbrookes.
I’ll report back as to how I get on following the cystodiathermy. For those that don’t know this is a procedure whereby any abnormalities are, in effect, cauterised.
watch this space……
Hi BDB1 .Sorry to hear you may have a recurrence but the positive is, diathermy is usually only used for small and early recurrences. Not had this myself, but many here have and report a fairly easy procedure under local anaesthetic with a bit of a sting when zapped. I am sure others with experience will be along to share how it went. Best wishes.
Hi BDB1, I had repeated small reoccurrences over the 3 plus years of my BCG. I was always given a general anaesthetic but on a couple of occasions I was under the impression that they had cauterised rather than cut, (though nobody actually used term cystodiathermy) Main thing is despite repeated small cancer returns I was able to continue with BCG and ultimately after dose 27 in I was all clear. That was 5 years ago and fingers crossed all good still. I was always told the BCG protocol was 27 doses but I know these days they seem to give less doses to try to protect from inflammation. Good luck with the treatment. Let us know how things go? Best wishes Hx
Thank you for your comments. It is so reassuring to hear of other people’s similar experiences
I'm under Addenbrookes too, though I had my surgery 14 years ago, many of the team has changed since then! We know that BC is highly recurrent, so it is relatively common for something to pop up from time to time. BCG seems more effective in some people than others. Hope all goes well for you.
Hi BDB1,Prior to cancer I had diathermy many times to remove red patches. It was done under general anaesthetic and I didn’t have any problems with it except once.I had a bladder haemorrhage a month after the procedure but it was my own fault for moving heavy boxes of books the day before.Best wishes Jane
