Hi all not been on here for few weeks had my treatment and now have to have bladder flush that I start 31st Oct then one every week for 6 weeks .... Can you tell me what it's like please been told it's through a cafiter and have to hold it for hour (they'll be lucky ) before going to toilet....

  • It's a simple procedure catheter in, drain any urine and add the Mitomycin usually. Around 40-50ml of fluid. I seem to remember them saying. Can feel a bit cold going in sometimes. Over in a few minutes. Uncomfortable for guys at least possibly slightly less for women due to different anatomies. Feels like you are wetting yourself when the catheter goes in and the fluid.

You will have to wait a short while the first time to make sure you can go home, 30 to 40 mins then first time for me. After that's it's done and you can go straight home. Hold it for an hour and move around to help it get everywhere in your bladder. No side effects or problems for me.

First pee is a purple shade usually but colour could vary dependant on the drug used or manufacturer possibly.

It really generally isn't anything to worry or be concerned about it's over in minutes.

Limit your drinking on the mornings of instillation so you can hold it for an hour before needing the loo.

If you think you will struggle to hold it for an hour I'd suggest not drinking other than a few sips of water until the chemo is done and you have held it for a hour, drinking after the procedure will obviously dilute the drug somewhat.

The aim is to kill any remaining cancer cells off that may be present, or at least stop recurrences for 5 years. Surveillance will still be needed regularly.

It's not as bad as the Flexi camera but I still found it very uncomfortable being a man, but some guys hardly feel any discomfort or pain, and similarly most of the women on here say the Flexi is fine and not that uncomfortable or painful.

But even though it caused some pain and discomfort for me it got easier and I got through it all.

I am certain you will be fine. Try not to overthink it or worry yourself over it.

A follow up rigid cystoscopy will be done under GA to have a look and remove anything that might be there. I'm in for mine this week after my chemo flush.
