Hi everyone i got diagnosed last year with bladder cancer t1 grade 3 so far ive had two different consultants ive got a hospital appointment in two weeks for biopsy results got another consultant now is this normal procedure Phil .
Hi Phil,This can happen.I saw one consultant who did the TURBT,another who gave me the cancer diagnosis and another for follow up post surgery in addition to the surgeon.I still haven’t met my urologist who took over my case about 5 yrs ago.I know the rest of the team as I was a long term urology patient before cancer.I always write who I have seen on my appt letter as often the person you see is not necessarily the same named on the letter.Jane
In my hospital 1 consultant did the TURBT and gave me my diagnosis several weeks later. (That team also does the BCG stuff and post op follow up)
Then I was transferred to the team doing the robotic surgery - several consultants of varying levels on that team as well as more junior surgeons. . After the cystectomy that team has kept me longer than the usual year (over 2.5 years) before saying they'll be transferring me back to the first consultant's team, probably later this summer.
Only 1 oncologist consultant and I'll see her for 5 years post op though during chemo I saw some of her staff sometimes as well.
I don't think it matters who I see as long as they are competent, some of the more junior people who ring me are good fun and remember me from doing post op checkups, which helps keep things pleasant.
In most other specialisms (referred to because of things that cropped up along the way, eg cardiology, vascular, haematology, nerve specialists,) I generally haven't seen or talked to the consultants, the middle level staff keep things going.
They've all been great. And they're all at the same hospital, though not all at the main site.
Hope that's useful.
All the best,
