Hi, I hope you don’t mind me popping in from the Living With Incurable Cancer Group to ask a question Please!
My husband was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer, had major surgery to remove part of his colon in 2023. Then got the all clear which was fantastic. Last November was 1 year on from his surgery. He had a colonoscopy which we were told was clear! Amazing. But the CT scan showed something in the bladder so the surgeon sent him to Urology to get it checked out. After an overnight stay in hospital for tests, biopsy and removal of lumps, we were told he had Bladder Cancer (non muscular) and would need Targeted Chemo for 6 weeks in a row. His 6th session was this week.
i wanted to ask if anyone else who has had Targeted Chemo had extreme fatigue as a side effect? As the weeks have gone on it has been getting progressively worse. He falls asleep on his armchair, at the dining table, at his computer etc., is in bed before 8pm and doesn’t get up until late afternoon and is very quiet!
Hi anndanv and a warm welcome to the group, although I can see you are no stranger to the community. It must be hard for you with your own things going on. Chemo associated fatigue is very common and affects some people more than others. I had to curl up on the couch for a couple of hours each day. Do you know what regimen of chemo he is having which could help with any advice? My GP prescribed some steroids for me which helped but your husband must make his team aware of how he is. The main advice regarding bladder cancer is to drink plenty of water to keep things flushed out and keep the bladder fresh. A touch of lemon barley water helps to get the fluids down. Best wishes.
Hi Rly, Thank you for your reply. The drug is called Mitomycin-c and is inserted directly into the bladder via a catheter type tube, then while it disperses in the bladder, he cannot go to the toilet for a total of 60 minutes, to allow it to work.
He has been drinking a lot and I have changed us to decaffeinated coffee and tea and is drinking more water. He did tell his team about the tiredness but I’m not sure if he told them just how bad it is. If I knew for sure it is a side effect then I wouldn’t worry as much. It is definitely a more difficult job being a carer than the person with cancer! Thanks again,
Love Annette x
Good morning Annette, Your husband has been on a long and tiring journey. I wish him well. I had 6 instillations of Mitomycin but fortunately I did not get any side effects. Has your husband got a designated Cancer Nurse? I would contact them and explain his symptoms of tiredness and fatigue. They are a great help in times of need. Garviv
