I have had 20 BCG treatments now the last one gave really bad side effects. A lot of pain, bleeding and five months on I have been offered either just go to observation, or to try the BCG given with an antibiotic which may reduce side effects. Has anyone tried this? My treatment plan was for 27 BCG. I have had no recurrence of T1G3. I just don't know what to do.
Merry Christmas
Hi thumper1 and welcome. I don't have any advice or insight into BCG with antibiotics, however i am on the same treatment plan as you for T1G3 . I shall follow the responses with great interest as the future side effects are something that concerns me . I have had 13 bcg so far. It is a very difficult decision you have to make and i am not sure if there is that much information or studies done for either situation. Hopefully someone will be along with some insight or experience soon to help your decision.
Much love Angela x
thumper1 I think that’s one for the treatment team to advise on. You need to bear in mind that BCG is a live therapy using BCG bacteria. However antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria. So even supposing there was an actual purpose to taking antibiotics, one would have to be very careful, for obvious reasons. So check with your treatment team. And have a good Christmas Leo
Hi thumper1, initially I had G2T1 and during BCG treatment I had a reoccurrence annually, mainly low grade tumours but at least one intermediate grade. My hospital team suggested I stop at dose 18 because of risks to poor battered bladder. I decided to plod on because of my 4 recurrences. I never had such a severe reaction as you describe, no bleeding but very very sore at times and a feeling like having flu for a few days after some doses. However my bladder looked pretty awful (like a grazed knee!) at cystoscopies for at least two years after I had completed dose 27 in August 2021. By some miracle so far I've been all clear since then and at the last cystoscopy things looked much more normal, and I am now promoted to annual screenings. I was told if I had stopped at 18, I could have restarted at any time. I've not heard of antibiotics being prescribed but your consultant will know what they are doing. Wishing you luck Hx
