Little bit confused........

Hi everyone, I haven't posted for a while so will quickly recap my journey....   I had my first TURBT/mitomycin on 19th September after which the consultant confirmed without doubt that I had bladder cancer but said that he had resected the tumor and it was likely that I would need a preventative course of mitomycin.  My CNS called on 9th October to say following histology, my cancer was grade 3 because of the presence of Carcinoma in Situ.  The  follow up to this was a 2nd TURBT operation which happened on 30th October.  Following this one, the consultant said that multiple biopsies had been take and they have looked to see how deep the CIS had penetrated into my bladder.   It was suggested that the red patch that was thought to be CIS could have been a reaction to the Mitomycin given after the 1st TURBT.  I have a letter from the hospital that confirms the finding of the 1st TURBT and the CIS diagnosis.

I don't understand that even though I have confirmation that CIS is in my bladder, it is now it is being suggested that it may been a reaction to the Mitomycin.    Surely during the 1st TURBT the red patch was noticed and duly biopsied and this is where the CIS diagnosis has come from..... all before the initial Mitomycin dose.

I haven't had any results yet following my 2nd TURBT but do have an appointment on 18th December.

  • Bearing in mind that we are not medical experts.... Can you clarify the diagnosis from first TURBT - was it TCC as well as CIS? CIS is always high grade and a second TURBT is standard with any G3 diagnosis, to ensure appropriate follow up treatment.

Is it possible that they meant 'a' red patch seen on second TURBT? Or was a red patch seen at initial cysto too? In any case, I'm afraid all you can do is wait until the results of the biopsies from the second TURBT & consultation on 18th Dec. Then your consultant can explain the results and advise what treatment options have been recommended. If CIS is confirmed, this is more aggressive than TCC and something other than mitomycin may be suggested. Best wishes.

  • Hi Tizzy,

I understand that red patches can be a symptom of the treatment rather a sign of cancer.

I've had a red patch caused by my BCG treatment and a biopsy was taken at the time and came back clear.

So in my case there weren't any red patches during the initial TURBTs, just the tumor and some carpeting which was removed.

The red patch appeared later due to my treatment.

I hope this makes sense  I'm not the best at explaining things. And I hope I understood your question properly.
