Hi, I have been referred for a cystoscopy. It might seem strange but I'm more worried about any after effects from the procedure. Can anyone tell me how they were after having this done and whether they had any problems and if so how they dealt with them.
Any feedback from people having no after effects also welcome.
Thanks
Hi Tinkerbelle38 and welcome to the group. A flexible cystoscopy is a fairly straightforward procedure and takes about 5 minutes. Generally painless but maybe slightly uncomfortable. You can see for yourself on the screen if anything untoward is there and the doctor will talk you through things. The main after effect is a bit of stinging when peeing for a day or so. I have had lots of these with no adverse effects. Always drive myself there and back. I hope it goes well. Best wishes..
Good morning Tinkerbelle38 and welcome. You may have a flexible or rigid cystoscopy. With a flexible you remain awake and the procedure takes five or ten minutes and the after effects are minimal , you’ll be able to watch the procedure on a tv screen. The rigid requires anaesthetic and may involve taking a biopsy , the after effects may involve some bleeding over a day or two. The anaesthetic may be by spinal injection in which case you’ll be awake but immobile from your waist down for a couple of hours. I had a rigid cystoscopy and biopsy last week and apart from the bleeding had no problems , best wishes, John
Hi Tinkerbelle38,Welcome to the group. It’s a quick procedure usually only a few minutes if you are having a flexible cystoscopy.
I never found them that bad minimal discomfort when the scope was inserted but you get a numbing gel beforehand.Drink plenty afterwards. Most people on here find lemon barley water helpful to drink.Best wishes Jane
Yes it's the flexible one that I'm having. Thanks for all of your feedback on what to expect and tips. I like the idea of being able to see inside my bladder on the screen!
Hi Tinkerbelle38
I have had 2 flexible cystoscopies now. It is fascinating to see inside your own bladder. Please take someone with you to be there when they discuss the findings with you. My husband came with me. He had to wait in the waiting room while I had the first cystoscopy. I was petrified but it was an all female team who were lovely and very compassionate. I saw my bladder tumour on the screen and was totally shocked. My husband came in while we discussed the treatment, I'm so glad he did because I was almost too shocked to take it in.
Hope you have a nice clear cystoscopy.
Love Ade xx
Hello Tinkerbelle38, I hope everything goes well with your flexible cystoscopy. It’s wonderful seeing inside your bladder takes your mind off the procedure. My consultant explained everything. Great advice from Ade re taking husband, partner, friend with you. Being a man of course I went alone! Stay well Garviv
Thanks, I hope it does all go OK. I'm not looking forward to it at all so seeing inside my bladder will definitely help to distract me. I didn't realise they do that. I usually feel I can manage on my own for tests but my partner has said he can come with me for this. I'm dreading it! Take Care
Thanks for the advice, my partner can come with me. I usually go on my own for tests but I'm dreading this one. If they do find anything, I think I'll also be too shocked to remember what they say or discuss. I didn't realise I can see it on the screen, that is at least something I can focus my mind on. Take Care x
Try not to worry it’s a quick procedure with a flexi scope. My last one took 10 minutes.I was walking out to find my partner who had only just parked the car.Let us know how you get on,we are all here for support.
