Hi all wanted to ask if on second turbt you have to have catheter in again and have to come home with one again as on my first turbt I was informed I had to go home with it and keep it in for 2 days but after just one day started have bad pains and problems with the catheter and contact hospital where I had my op they couldn’t see me as had no beds so they informed me to contact district nurse she refused to come out to see me so ended up in a&e had to wait for hours like most in a&e these days before it was removed and had a water infection after it was removed so a little worried if I have to have a catheter in again on second one going Thursday xxxx many thanks all mandy
Hi Mandymay . Follow up TURBTs are usually less severe than the first and so less blood. They usually remove the catheter when your pee runs clear. In my follow ups, the catheters were removed after an hour or so. It will depend on what they actually do. I hope it goes well for you > Best wishes.
Thank you Rily fingers crossed then that I don’t have to have mine in for long as don’t want it in when I come home the reason for the second turbt is to check if cancer as gone into muscle as they only took tumour away last time but found out it was g3 cancer so got to check muscle if I got information right
Hi Mandymay . A follow up is standard procedure, just to double check and get a more accurate diagnosis. In most cases they just take some biopsies to check rather than a full resection like the first. Best wishes.
Mandymay my 2nd TURBT not nearly as bad as 1st, left hospital same day. Passed some pretty big clots on discharge, but all was well. If they give you a catheter it will be because they are worried about urinary retention from clots. Catheter way better than being in retention. I am sure all will be well. Good luck, Leo
Hi Mandy,
My second TURBT was much more gentle on me than the first. I didn't have a catheter left in for either of surgeries. Hopefully yours will be the same. Hope all goes well for you and that you get home the same day.
Sending love and hugs, Ade xx
Hi Mandy
when I went in for my second TURBT I asked if I would have a catheter in as I didn’t like it after my my first TURBT and was told maybe I would maybe I wouldn’t all depends on the individual some of us bleed more than others and also depends on how much messing around in your Bladder is required I wouldn’t read to much into it they are put in place for your safety as a blood clot can be serious thing hopefully it’s. Removed in the coming Days

Hello Ade and Mandy
Monday 19/08/24
Just to repeat and addenda Ade's account of TURBT 2,
I didn't have a catheter left in for my TURBT2. But.
I did have to stay in overnight ( because my TURBT2 procedure was scheduled ( and performed late in the urological surgeons' working day.. it was under a general anaesthetic .. i.e. I was knocked out... ( so didn't feel a thing !).. woke up early evening... with no catheter in ! great !! but they had to insist that I stay in overnight ( 'cos it was too late in the day to formally discharge me so... I'd admit to sleeping fitfully ( I just wasn't tired !!) but drank loads and loads of water to " flush out any " debris".. there was very little !! ( unlike my TURBT1 6 weeks before.. chopping out the smallish tumour) and... I was discharged quite early the following morning ! ( The only delay was getting my formal discharge document/letter... the IT systems were playing up from the " downtime bug" that " hit" all major IT systems a few weeks ago. Hope you find my account reassuring !!?? My TURBT 2 was on 30/07/2024... they took some biopsies and confirmed ," no recurrence).. Hopefully I 'll find out this Thursday 22/08/24 ( at the Urology clinic.. out patient day care & with one of my ( many) specialist nurse advocates present that it's not muscle invasive AND that they can start me on a course of BCG Immunotherapy. I'm optimistic !! .. cautiously optimistic !!
Ciaran ( 70 yr old bloke!)
