Hi I am posting on behalf of my dad. Last week he had a kidney and bladder removal due to stage 3 cancer. As mentioned he is struggling with bowel movements post op which was expected. Is there anything that can help him that has worked for others? He is taking a mild laxative at the moment but would fibre supplements help? I'm worried he's straining and going to cause harm to his various surgical incisions and drain holes! Thank you
I believe that walking will help wake up bowels, even if only a slow shuffle. I confess I didn't walk while in hosp & didn't manage any bowel movement until Day 7 - a hard bullet, but incisions etc stayed intact OK.
Some people say chewing gum will help. Generally during recovery, protein & carbs are better than too much fibre, but do ask the experts in hosp. Bowels can be very erratic & he may change to looseness & frequency - don't be alarmed!
