Is drinking tea or coffee advised against post TURBT?

thanks

Leo

  • As far as I am aware, cafffene can irritate the bladder, so better to go with the decaf versions.

Also fizzy drinks have a similar effect, so best to avoid whilst the bladder is sensitive.

  • Hi  . Just to echo what  says, we have always been advised against drinking any caffeine drinks especially coffee and at all times not just post treatment. Also, if you like a beer, try and stick to real ale as the mass produced fizzy stuff may contain chemicals. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Cheers Rily,Tortoise,

I gave up the booze about a month before being diagnosed, so that’s not a problem, I do have the occasional becks blue. I better order up some decaf tea and coffee.

i have noticed that even Esk green tea makes me pee a lot, must be the caffeine….

    cheers,

    Leo

  • I didn't have any issues with coffee, but only have a couple of cups a day. Definitely has a diuretic effect though. If you don't like plain water, at least try frequent sips, or have mouthfuls in between a more flavoured drink. that way you will get plenty of fluids.

  • I have just one small cup a day - part of my culture and difficult to give up

  • Hi Leo1,

I pretty much gave up tea and coffee when I was diagnosed. However I didn't really drink that much anyway. I only have fruit or herbal teas now.

Although saying that after both my TURBTs and cystcopys the nurses always offer me a cup of tea when I'm back in my room recovering..I just went with the water...

I went a bit overboard with giving up things, but I would think a cup of coffee or tea won't make much difference in the overall picture.

In between treatments I do like a pint of real ale or a Guinness and I'm sure alcohol isn't that great for the bladder.

I do drink lots of water, I feel like a fish sometimes. Although someone kindly suggested Robinson's fruit and barley and that goes down a treat.

I guess it's difficult juggling what' we enjoy and what we need to avoid.

    Wishing you all the best.

    Trevor

  • Hi Trevor many thanks. I gave up the booze after realizing how harmful it was to me, a WHO Class 1 carcinogen to boot. So it suits me to have given up permanently. Someone else mentioned barley water as being helpful, so I will give that a whirl.

    thanks for your help,

    Leo

  • Hi Leo,I’m sure one small coffee won’t hurt.I was on a very restrictive diet due to Interstitial cystitis.I was told to drink Cranberry juice but that was agony so I stopped taking it after a while. It’s all a bit trial and error with food and drink and irritated bladders.Jane x

  • Hi all, it was my GP over 40 years ago, when I presented very early with what would have been my second ever bout of cystitis [nothing to do with bc] who told me about the Robinson's Lemon Barley. He said if I went straight from the surgery to the shop and got a bottle, and drank the whole lot diluted as instructed on the Robinson's Lemon Barley label in 24 hours, he thought it would clear. If it did not, he said, come back and I will give you the antibiotics then. What a wise man, I did not need the antibiotics or the second appt to get them.

The 'fruit and..' is not the same thing at all; it is something to do with the effect of the amount of barley that is in the original product that alters the pH [acid/alkali balance] in your whole waterworks that discourages the bugs. Don't forget tp shake the bottle well every time you use it, as the barley settles to the bottom.

    Hope this helps,

    Denby

  • Almost 7 years ago at the start of my BC, Denby shared this nugget of information with me and I have never looked back. I always have at least 3 bottles of Robinsons in my cupboard so I never run out. I try to drink 2 litres a day particularly if I plan on raising any glasses of alcohol (which I do tonight!) Happy New Year Denby, Rily, Jane and everyone and best wishes for good health H xx
