Rigid Cystoscopy

Hi, I had a rigid cystoscopy last Wed, biopsy taken. I’m still in pain and blood in urine. Is this normal, internet seems to say everything should be back to normal a few days after procedure?

  • I can't say what is normal. For me it has been exactly one month since I had a similar thing. The hospital seemed to suggest the bleeding should stop after about 3 days. I was in pain when peeing for at least a week and am still peeing blood now, a month later.

I called the hospital who said it's probably an infection and to see my GP. Did that and got put on anti-biotics. Still peeing blood.

I'm also on blood thinners (warfarin) so that probably doesn't help the situation but even so it's disturbing how much blood there appears to be (my pee is red not brown). I feel OK but I find it seems to be worse if I move around, like walking, I need to pee almost right away and it's bloody. Basically making me house bound for the last month.

They also put some stents in which were supposed to be removed after 3 weeks which I think is the problem.

Like I said, I have no idea what is normal. I just wanted you to know that you are not the only one having this issue.

  • Hi  . It can take longer for some to recover than others. It can depend on the severity of the cut and how deep they have gone. Small amounts of blood is not unusual. There is always the chance of aggravating the wound if doing too much. It is important to keep taking lots of water to keep things flushed out. As MagicMirror says, there is always a possibility of infection which is not uncommon. Pass a sample in to your GP  surgery for testing. Something they don't always tell you is that at about the 10-14 day period, the scab starts to break away and you may see some tiny blood clots. This can be a worry if you did not know. As always, if things don't get better or get worse, then contact the medics. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi I had a rigid cystoscopy August 11. The consultant did say don't be surprised if you see some blood or a scab breaking away one to two months after the consultant did say  he took a bit more away than expected for the biopsy to be analysed so don't be surprised if a scab will come away many many weeks down the line now today is December 1.

I seen a scab and blood in my urine one last week and one today which is Monday the first. I spoke to urology as I have another flexible cystoscopy coming up this Thursday the 4th and they reassured me not to worry as this can happen depending on the extent the operation for the biopsy.

The hardest part was chemotherapy but apart from that I've done well. So anyone out there whose worried shouldn't because everybody is different. The funny thing is the only time I bled was in the hospital but the days and weeks that followed I haven't had any blood in my urine at all but I must be honest I have been working in my garden right up until now (December 1st) and I have been lifting and exerting myself in a way that maybe I shouldn't have. So maybe that's why a scab has come away now.

All I'm saying is not to worry. I have muscle invasive bladder cancer and I'm nearly finishing my treatment of Cisplatin, Gemcitabine,  and immunotherapy Durvalumab. I have progressed well. Had hardly any side effects so I would have had 13 infusions of immunotherapy in total so have three more to go.

Good luck everybody have faith stay strong

  • You could ask for oxybutinin if your having bladder spasms when urinating, I suffer a lot with bladder spasams for 4 or 5 days or so after a rigid with tumpir removal or biopsies taken. It does help by relaxing the bladder and makes the pain more manageable. When I had my first tumour I had a lot of blood on and off for 6 to 7 weeks. Every time I asked I was told it's normal it will her better. Average urination amount of usually around 300 to 500 mil of liquid. So it does not take much blood to turn it rather red.

  • I also had a stent fitted and it caused me no end of grief and possibly also why my bleeding was pretty bad for the full 6 to 7 weeks before it finally stopped.

So I feel for you with more than one stent fitted.

As you said to the OP you are not alone plenty of us have been there too.
