Hello there,
Please help.
Patient is 74/M.
They had their fifth round of BCG two weeks ago.
The frequent urination still continues with irritation around the penis area. The urination is around every 20 minutes and the doctors have today asked him to keep a chart of water / urine levels.
Doctors have stopped the sixth round of BCG and have asked for the following medications:
Lignocaine gel/Soframycin to avoid infection. Dolonex DT 20mg once a day for a week and also Nitrofurantoinfor a week.
Also to add he has had this Urine Culture test and that hasn't shown anything (UTI etc)
Hello anon, I am sorry the patient is having problems during his BCG course. I had similar but probably not as severe. My six week BCG instillation course took nearly three months because of infections. They stop the BCG course if there is a urine infection because there is a danger of more infection and sepsis. Once the infection is controlled then his BCG will continue. Frequent urination is par for the course during BCG treatment. I finished my BCG treatment and had a rigid cystoscopy six weeks later to assess the results. Waiting to see my consultant shortly. I am still wanting to urinate often but it is abating. I am a 73 year old male. I am sure once the patients infection is controlled and his BCG course finished he will be offered rigid a cystoscopy to assess the cancer and discuss any further treatment. I do hope all goes well. I am sure things will look brighter in a couple of weeks. Has the patient got a Macmillan nurse or Urology nurse he can contact? They are a great source of knowledge and reassurance. Garviv
Thank you so much Garviv! I think the doctors have said to him that he is clear of Infection but he will check again.
Hi. I have recently finished my induction course of 6 BCG. instillations 1-4 were OK but No.5 knocked me out for 3-4 days. High leucocytes and blood in urine, but no infection when I turned up for number 6, which was given on time and no side effects. Just had rigid cystoscopy to check on whether the BCG worked .. results in a couple of weeks time. and all fingers crossed. Frequent urination appears to be common, with occasional accident.
Thanks Tortoise - good luck! please keep us posted with the results.
