Hi

A relative as bladder cancer, unable to have treatment so is terminal.  Just had a scrape.  Been advised that the whole bladder is nearly full of cancer and talking of possibly a drain from kidneys.

Any advice please would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi Daisy and sorry to hear this difficult news. Just wanting to say welcome to this friendly group. I'm sure someone will be along presently who can offer relevant advice, I know there have been quite few mentions of drains, also called stents I believe, recently.

  • Hi Daisy. Nothing much in the way of positive advice, only to enquire about any clinical trials. I n the meantime, make sure they are drinking loads of water to flush out any debris and help prevent any blockages. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • My husband had his bladder removed & was luckily healthy enough to have a neo bladder, so no bag outside. He had to have chemotherapy & still awaiting PET scan result as to whether he will need anymore treatment.  He is very happy with the new bladder. Would this be possible for you ??? Wish you  all the best xxxx

  • Sadly he can’t have any treatment or operations.  It’s to far gone I’m afraid.

just a question when the bladder is totally full of cancer.  Does the urine then go/stay in the kidneys?

or what happens if it can’t drain from kidneys?

  • Sorry to hear this prognosis Daisy1611. Does your relative have a palliative nurse yet ? These nurses are the experts on what might happen when things get worse, and used to answering difficult questions, including supporting family members. Sending love at this tough time. H x

  • I’m sorry you’ve had such sad and difficult news. Possibly a drain from the kidneys via a nephrostomy? This is a drain via a tube inserted through the back into the kidney which allows the urine to drain into a bag outside the body.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. When the tubes forn the kidneys are blocked, urine remains in the kidneys & causes infection. A drain can be added for each kidney under local anesthetic which drains into a small bag on each side. This is then manually emptied from time to time. Before my radical cysectomy I had one blocked tube & I used to have my drain bag under my trousers & safety pinned to my under shorts. The dressing will need to be changed by a district nurse every few days. They can use a waterproof dressing to make showering easier.
