Pain and blood in urine following chemo

I had my final round of chemo on Tuesday and since then have had quite a bit of pain  and trace blood on urination (more than normal). Obviously in a course of 6 weeks most were almost pain free so a bit concerned that the last two have been painful.

My tumour was TA Grade 2 (3 Cm) it was removed by TURBT in December. I asked my Cancer nurse and she said this was "normal" but for me this does not feel normal.  I will ring them again but are there any suggestions on how to bring my bladder back to some sort of normality and will this bleeding and cystitis pass over?

  • Sorry to hear you are in pain Byron62. I haven't experienced chemo but with painful bladder reactions to BCG the mantra is...dink, drink, drink. Flush the toxins away. Thanks to advice on this site,  lemon barley juice is my preferred option, others say cranberry juice, or of course just water. Definitely talk to your CNS if still suffering by Monday. xx

  • Aww thank you. Blush  I have a constant ache at the moment and sat with a hot water bottle drinking 1.5 litres of water (may switch to cider for the England v Ireland rugby Rugby football  later!

  • Hi Byron62,So sorry you are suffering after the chemo. It’s always worth getting checked for urinary infection just to rule it out.I hope your bladder pain eases soon.Enjoy the rugby.Best wishes Jane x

  • Sure I am going to do that on Monday if it has not cleared up. Thank you

  • Plenty of water and cranberry juice. I was given the number of a 24 hour help line when I was having Chemo at Barts. Definitely contact your CSN, but it's not uncommon, remember your immune system does get clouted during chemo. Good luckFingers crossed

  • Unfortunately my support down here is pretty no existent. Still passing blood - rang the Dr's and gave a sample and no infection. If you don't mind me asking did you have similar symptoms? If so when did it ease?

  • The issue I had was that on two occasions it looked like I had blood in my urine, but I couldn't confirm. On the first occasion the helpline said "keep an eye on it and wasn't uncommon for chemo to cause bleeding.", the second time: the helpline told me to tell my chemo nurse (I was due a chemo session that day), so they could do a urine test. Unfortunately, the chemo nurse said "It' s likely to be a one off", but to call the helpline if it started again. In both cases, I can't confirm that there was blood  and it cleared up almost immediately.

Sorry I can't be of further help.
