I have had a full course of BCG treatment 2018 - 2022 unfortunately the side effect has left me with inflammation in the bladder. My oncology nurse has told me this is about a one in ten problem for which there is no treatment but should improve over time. At the moment it is very painful (same as after each BCG treatment) and entails very frequent visits to the toilet. One 24 hour period totalled 19 visits, during the night 6 - 7. Certainly done a good job of "locking me down". Any advice or similar experience would be gratefully appreciated
Hi yewdee,Although I didn’t have BCG I did have bladder inflammation for many years before cancer.I really feel for you,it is miserable. If you haven’t tried already cutting out certain food/drink may help with the pain. For me cutting out tomatoes, onions and citrus fruit/drink did make a difference.Best wishes Jane
Hi yewdee, my BCG was 2017-2021.I was fortunate to avoid inflammation long term though I did feel sensitive and cystitis-like after some infusions. I think the only thing to do is keep drinking and flushing the bladder, although it feels counter-intuitive when racing to the loo so frequently. Another site member suggested lemon barley squash and I still try to drink 2 litres a day as well as tea, coffee. Hope things settle down over time. Best wishes H
Thanks for the info Herothedog I'm really looking for someone who had the inflammation after treatment and I can start chatting and compare notes with, although all info is useful. Also might add I have been advised that 200ml of cranberry daily could be helpful.
Cranberry certainly may stop bugs sticking to the bladder lining to cause UTIs. However be careful about juice. It is naturally so tart that a] it won't do your teeth any good long-term and b] it is usually sweetened. If it has sugar in this is counter productive as may 'feed' the bugs you are trying to get rid of. If it is chemically sweetened do you want those? My husband has not had another UTI since I have been giving him cranberry tablets every time he has a procedure. This avoids the possible pitfalls of the juice. Hope that helps,
Denby
Denby - Thank you so much for that very useful information. Could you further expand on the information and tell me what daily dose of tablet your husband takes and also is there any particular brand you use. You seem to have researched this subject thoroughly.
Best wishes to you both
yewdee
