My hubby is experiencing overnight shivers and chills.  He has been diagnosed with a UTI and given antibiotics .  He was told the night sweats and shivers were part of his condition .

He has had a TURBT his bladder was perforated and he had a catheter for a month.  He is grade three aggressive invasive muscle wall. A lesion in the liver has been seen

A PET scan on the 9th December will give us the full picture .

Not sure what happens next He has a consultant action by phone January .

In-between  he is more concerned on how to reduce the overnight tremors and shivers he is taking paracetamol.

  • Hi Magtom,It must be a bad infection if your husband is having night sweats.Has he had any blood tests recently ? It is essential that his urine is tested in the lab so that he is on the correct antibiotics.I always asked to have the urine test repeated if I didn’t feel better. Some of the hospital acquired infections are hard to shift. It took 3 lots of antibiotics to get rid of my last one as it grew something rarer.Regular paracetamol and plenty of fluids should help.Lemon barley water and cranberry juice are helpful for urine infections.I found drinking large amounts was difficult so I sipped regularly throughout the day.I hope your husband feels better soon.Best wishes Jane

  • Good evening Magtom and I hope Hubby will  soon feel better.  I had a similar experience with an infection which lasted about three days and involved feeling hot and cold with shivering and sweating. I was given antibiotics for a week which cleared the problem completely, with best wishes, J.

  • Hi Magtom

Always check with a pharmacist; if approved it could be helpful to take sustained release Vitamin C, zinc supplements, and high dose-odour-controlled garlic tablets to help fight the infection. If I get a significant sore throat etc I will take 500 mg Vit C two or three times a day-spacing evenly to ensure continuous coverage as the body cannot store it (that's why sustained release is best). The garlic is best swallowed with cool liquid. If he is not already on one, a good quality general multivitamin-and-mineral tablet is helpful long term to make good the nutritional deficit of non-organic food and drink in our diets. Its zinc ingredient should not be zinc oxide - if it is choose a different one.  The Vit C also promotes healing.

Hope this is of some help,

  • Thank you ge drinks plenty to keep hydrated mainly filtered water .

    Hopefully the antibiotics will help

  • Hi Magtom sorry things are so difficult for your husband. Personally I don't think it matters what he drinks in terms of diluted squash, fruit juice, tap or other water. Whatever he fancies and can swallow. I think it's volume that counts, 2 litres on top of diuretics tea/coffee etc. I think it's the on-going flushing that helps but I've no medical qualification to say this other than personal experience and an intense interest in the colour of my urine Slight smile. Can he phone his CNS and explain what's happening? Antibiotics take about 48 hours to kick in is my guess ? but if his symptoms continue to be so horrible I'd want to seek medical help. Make life more comfortable for him as a priority so he can face next treatments, xx

  • My antibiotics were prescribed by my cns.

  • We are awaiting the cultures to come back to establish which antibiotics to give him .

Hopefully tomorrow so worried for him we are in the hands of the NHS and we can not do more than the excellent advice of being hydrated .

    Thank you all
