So my mum lives alone and is 75, she had TURBT back in June and a few weeks ago had a cystoscopy. She was told she will receive a telephone consultation to discuss the results but then recently received a letter to say they wanted to see her in person this Tuesday. A few days later she received a letter saying she was scheduled for another cystoscopy in February. She is absolutely beside herself and thinking the absolute worst. I’m finding it really difficult to deal with things as I have a 18 month old daughter and am 6 months pregnant with my second daughter. Her mental health has declined dramatically since being given the diagnosis and I feel like she doesn’t have any fight left in her. I am going with her Tuesday to meet the Urologist and I’m praying the news won’t be too bad, but im very anxious myself. Just needed to reach out because I feel like a part of me is being very harsh to her but I just want her to be positive and not think the worst as we don’t know what the outcome is going to be. Has anybody else been called in after a cystoscopy?
Hello HelenB1988 and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear about your mum. It is difficult to not feel anxious about unexpected appointments, but this can happen. Appointments can be very erratic, and more so during this covid period. People are fitted in where they can. Good to know you are going with your mum and you will find out more. When you know what they propose for mum, there is a lot of experience here to help. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Hello HelenB1988 and also welcome to the group. Could I suggest you reach out to your local Carers' Association? They will be happy to see you as your Mum's carer I feel sure, and can offer all sorts of support to you, I think for the sake of both your daughters you need all the support you can get. Also a good idea to check out relaxation techniques and breathing etc to help you manage stress. I find lavender oil or lavender flowers under the pillow very calming, and every time I visit our GPs I squeeze and sniff a lavender bloom from the huge clumps by the door - it helps me deal with feeling cross about their incompetence!
Do come back to the forum as often as you need to and especially, as rily says, each time you find out more.
Best wishes, Denby
Morning HelenB1988, sorry you and your mum are feeling so anxious. I would also be suspicious that there might be a reoccurrence if they are calling your mum back in, though as Rily says appointment systems are completely erratic since the pandemic. Unfortunately bladder cancer frequently does return, but when this is at a low grade, contained within the bladder and found quickly via 3 monthly cystoscopies it can be managed very well. I have had reoccurrences 4 times since my original tumour was diagnosed in 2017 and still at 74 I'm full of beans and living a good life. The removal of reoccurrences have been very easy procedures and never required overnight stays. But my fingers are crossed this is nothing to worry about. Like Denby says come back and let us know how you get on and in meantime put your feet up. H x
Hey! Thanks so much for your kind reply! My mums bladder tumour was found early they said it was a superficial cancer but now I’m just really worried like is it possible that it could have spread beyond the bladder walls so quickly?? X
I'm not a medic but I don't think superficial low grade cancers spread that quickly. Your mum is in the system and in my experience the NHS is very vigilant when it comes to cancer. We patients don't need to fight, we just need to follow the Urology Department's guidance. Try to relax and look after yourself and the precious life you are carrying. That's what your mum would want I reckon. xxx
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
