Stoma location

My late wife had hers just above the waist line and to the right and found this to be very comfortable. The stoma nurse decided where it would go and no other options were offered.

Mine is slightly lower than the navel and about 7-8cm from it on the right hand side. Suits me fine. The urologist decided where it would go, based on his experience (vast!) and knowledge of my lifestyle. Bending was a problem during the first few months post-op, but that has now resolved itself. The abdomen is likely to be swollen post-op but this will probably deflate with time. A flat abdomen will make life easier, as skin folds can make bag and plate fitting difficult, but your stoma nurse will be competent to deal with that. Discuss it with your urologist/surgeon and make him/her aware of your lifestyle. All the best!

Thank you for your reply. Is a navel a tummy button? My first telephone discussion, they were talking about it being much higher.

Mine is about level with my navel and on the right.The stoma nurse measured me up and I didn’t get an option.It’s comfortable,but my stomach has remained much fatter than it was before the surgery.Love Jane

Tummy button. I would guess the exact location might also depend on your "bend line" - the place on your abdomen where you bend - and also on your physique since we are not all the same size. Winkers60 is right about the stomach being fatter than before: mine has now deflated a lot but is not quite the flat area that it was before the op.(7 months ago). In the end, you have to trust that the health professionals know what they are doing. You have to trust that they have the experience. After all, thousands of these operations are carried out and they want to do a good job. Surgeons take pride in that: a good, clean, job. Good wishes.

I have the stoma trial pack arrived  It took a while to get the strength to look inside  There are some bags & a test stoma  but i have no idea the position to try it

Hi Coojee,My stoma is an inch & a half away from the middle of the belly button on the right hand side.I wonder how much variation is there in stoma placement ? How are things with you both ? Love Jane xx
