Hi everyone, I just joined this group and I'm already amazed at all the positive and supportive messages I have read!
My dad (78 yrs) did a cystoscopy and CT Scan yesterday and the doctor advised me that the results suggest advanced bladder cancer. The CT Scan picked up multiple pelvic lymph nodes and multiple bony secondaries on the lumbar spine (L2 and L4). We are awaiting the biopsy results which will take two weeks. I'm at a loss as to our options. Does this suggested diagnosis automatically mean palliative care or does anyone have experience with treatment options at this stage that will help? Your responses would be greatly appreciated.
That diagnosis must have been a shock for you all. The consultant is the expert to advise what treatment will be suitable. Although advanced cancer with metastasis is not curable, there may still be measures to address the tumours and prolong life. So do not lose hope, but do try to make the most of whatever time you have together. Best wishes.
Hi Jahnel78, very sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis. You and your family must be feeling shocked and anxious. Obviously advanced cancer is very serious and your dad's disease may not be curable, but treatments to delay/slow progress might be possible. In the NHS the biopsy results are discussed by a multidisciplinary team. Then your dad's consultant will explain what the options are and offer advice for next steps. Hopefully at this appointment your dad will be introduced to his Clinical Nurse Specialist who can talk things through in depth and should be available by telephone to answer questions which occur to you over time. My CNS has been my best friend throughout treatment. Sending warm wishes at this difficult time. x
Thank you for your kind words. I wish we were in the UK but we are in Saint Lucia, so I am really hoping that we have some good options here.
Hi Jahnel78,I do hope that there will be some treatment available to your dad.Best wishes Jane
Hi . Not sure how good the health care system is where you are, but treatment for bladder cancer is fairly universal. I would imagine they would like to take some more detailed scans such as MRI. It is always difficult waiting for histology reports, but when they come through, you will have a better idea of what they are dealing with and can come up with a treatment plan. I hope all goes well. best wishes.
